Quadratic Equations

Introduction

Subject Matter: Math

Grade Level: 9th

Lesson Objective:

Learners will demonstrate knowledge of solving quadratic equations by the end they will be able to solve ten quadratic equations using the quadratic formula and factoring.

Common Core State Standard and/or Academic Content Standard: Type out one specific CCSS and/or one academic content standard met with this lesson. (http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/index.asp).

Solve Equations and Inequalities in one variable.

4b. Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for x^2=49), taking square roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula, and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation. Recognize when the quadratic formula gives complex solutions and write them as a+bi, a-bi for real numbers a and b.

Technology Standard: NETS for Students: Type out one specific student technology standard met with this lesson. (http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/NETS/ForStudents/NETS_for_Students.htm)

3. Knowledge Constructor- 3d. Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories and pursuing answers and solutions.

Evaluation

Student Research Questions:

Essential Question: See discussion of essential questions in week seven documents and resources or learning activities folder.

  1. How can you solve a quadratic equation by using the quadratic formula and factoring?

Subsidiary Questions (6-10):

2. What does it mean to factor a quadratic equation?

3. What is the quadratic formula? What does a, b, and c represent?

4. How many equations do you get when you use the quadratic equation?

5. When factoring what side of the equation do you need to see if it can be factorable before you use the quadratic equation?

6. Solve x^2=3x-4 using the quadratic equation and by factoring.

7. What are the clues from the signs that can help you determine the factors that you will use?

8. What does it mean when an equation is not factorable? Why?

9. What is the “box” and when does it help to factor quadratic equations.

10. What can you do when you have a -1 as a leading coefficient?

The assessment tool that I will be using is an exit ticket that will cover quadratic equations, the quadratic formula, and factoring.

Grading Criteria:

  1. Knows the Quadratic Formula and is able to solve quadratic equations using the Quadratic Formula appropriately.
  2. Can solve a quadratic equation correctly by factoring.
  3. Is able to use the appropriate method to solve a quadratic equation and is able to give an explanation.

Conclusion

Students will be able to:

  • solve quadratic equations
  • use the quadratic formula
  • factor quadratic equations
  • use online resources to answer questions

In what ways did the use of the Internet promote student learning?

The Internet promotes student learning by being able to navigate different websites where they can find helpful resources in order to expand their knowledge. Students are able to view videos and get extra help by using the Internet. All students learn different and with the help of the Internet they are able to use different resources that can accommodate their needs.

How will you assess student learning with this assignment?

What I will do to assess students learning with this assignment is to give them an exit ticket were they will have to solve quadratic equations by using the quadratic formula and factoring. Students will also need to write an explanation why they are using a certain method. I will make sure that everything that they saw on the websites appear on the assessment.
