Introduction
Malcom X saw in Islam and the Muslim world a solution to the civil rights issues of 1960s America. Nowadays, however, Muslims all over the world (and especially Europe and America) face a lot of hatred and prejudice because they remind people of terrorist organizations capable of committing horrible crimes.
What do you think about it?
Write an essay about the fairness with which we judge people based on their religion.
Task
Keep in mind you have to write an essay (in 140 - 190 words) about the fairness with which we judge people based on their religion including:
- A summary of the idea at the beginning.
- Examples of how people can be judged unfairly because of their beliefs.
- Arguments against or in favor of stereotyping people because of religion.
- Your own idea (Another aspect of the issue which has not been mentioned in the other paragraphs of your text)
- A call to action for everyone reading your essay.
Process
In terms of language, you are expected to use and highlight in the text:
- Words related to civil rights, freedom of speech and religion - freedom, liberty, boycott, restriction, prejudice, racism, understanding, tolerance, faith, belief, creed, religiosity, etc.
- Connectors and transitional expressions - while, however, although, despite, in addition, furthermore, therefore, as a result, for instance, etc.
- Phrasal verbs with 'come'
In terms of content:
- A summary of the idea at the beginning. Your first paragraph should be used to introduce your thesis statement, which is the idea you want to convey or the opinion you defend. However, instead of just saying "the way we judge people by their religion is bad", contextualize the issue a bit: briefly mention interesting facts, tell a short anecdote, use an attention grabber. The thesis statement should be at the end of this first paragraph.
- Examples of how people can be judged unfairly because of their beliefs. Can you think of any situation one's religion might be the reason why something bad happens to them? Do you know of any recent events related to that?
- Arguments against or in favor of stereotyping people because of religion. What do you think about the common stereotypes involving one's religion? Is it OK to stereotype people according to their beliefs?
- Your own idea (Another aspect of the issue which has not been mentioned in the other paragraphs of your text)
- A call to action for everyone reading your essay - Considering all you have said, what do you want your readers to do?
