The Writing Process

Introduction

Writing is an important skill to master! In order to be a successful writer, it is important that you know the steps to help you as you write.

The writing process is made up of five main steps. They include: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. All steps are important and will help make your essay a work of art!

By the end of this webquest, you will be able to answer the following questions:

1. What does it mean to prewrite?

2. What is a draft?

3. How do you revise a paragraph?

4. How do you edit a paragraph?

5. What does it mean to publish your work?

Task

A big part of writing is being able to conduct research! You will be researching each step of the writing process and important points that go along with each step.

As you research, you will fill out the graphic organizer with the information that you find.

Websites to use to conduct your research will be provided in the "process" tab.

** Remember: We are only in the computer lab for a short time. It is important that you stay on task so that you are able to complete the webquest. No other websites are allowed.

Process

1. Watch the video clip (below) in order to familiarize yourself with the steps of the writing process. Record your notes/thoughts as you watch the video in the space provided on your paper.

2. Using the websites below, research each step of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, editing, revising, and publishing).

For completion you must:

  • Define the step in your own words
  • Provide 3 details/points for each step

Use the following links (below) to find your research:

3. Respond to the take-away question. Question: Why is it important to use the writing process when writing an essay? Recall a time that you have used the writing process. If you have not, think about a time you tried to write an essay and had a hard time. Why was your writing successful or not successful?
