Introduction

Grilled Cheese Sandwich

This Web Quest will allow students to learn how to prepare a grill cheese sandwich. This assignment will teach students life skills and could also be used to illustrate to students how fractions work. The assignment will take place in the school's kitchen for special needs classes. Each student will be require to bring an item that we will needed to successfully make a grill cheese sandwich. Prior to entering the kitchen, the students will go over the ingredients that’s required for making a grilled cheese and the cooking safety tips. It is extremely important for students with special needs to obtain life skills. These skills are needed for them to become independent in the effort of them to caring for themselves as well as becoming responsible. First, the teacher will demonstrate step by step instructions on how to make grilled cheese. Next, the teacher will give each student an opportunity to prepare their own sandwich with thought teach observation and support.

Task

Inside-Out Grilled Cheese

The students will be required to independently make a grilled cheese sandwich. The students will collaborate with a peer in the class. The teacher will monitor each student's progress and will provide assistance as needed. Once the students has illustrated that they can independently make a grilled cheese sandwich, the student will be allowed to eat the sandwich and receive a grade.

Process

#NationalGrilledCheeseDay - I am making one of my favorite sandwiches on this cold and rainy day.  Grilled ham and cheese with Rosemary mayo.

Day One: (Monday)

Students will engage in a discussion about grill cheese sandwiches and their prior knowledge about grill cheese sandwiches. They will be asked a series of questions about what it takes to successfully make a grill cheese sandwich and required cooking tools and ingredients. the students will complete and a cut and paste activity on the steps to making a grilled cheese sandwich. At the end of class the steps will be reviewed and discussed. Once the students have received a passing grade on the activity, their name will be added to the list for making a sandwich and receive and item to bring.

 

Day Two: (Tuesday)

Students will review what they discussed yesterday in class regarding making a grill cheese sandwich. Students will then watch a video on youtube on how to make grill cheese sandwiches. After the students have viewed the video, the class will discuss what they have learned. The students will also complete a worksheet on how to make a grilled cheese sandwich.

Day Three: (Wednesday)

Students will review what they learned yesterday and will be able to ask any question they may have. They will also watch a different youtube video. Once the video is over the students will be escorted to the kitchen and given a tour. The teacher will then discuss safety tips and the importance of  following the safety tips. The teacher will remind students of the item that they were assigned to bring. At the end of the day the students will have a discussion on what the have learned the with in the last two days.

Day Four: (Thursday)

Students will turn in the item that they were assigned to bring. The students will then be grouped in groups of two. The teacher will have the students independently draw or write the steps of making a grilled cheese sandwich. The students will watch a video on the steps and the safety tips of making a grilled cheese sandwich.

 

 

Day Five: (Friday)

Prior to independently making the grilled cheese sandwich, the students will discuss what they have learned about making a grilled cheese sandwich. The teacher will ask and answer student's questions. The students will be taken to the kitchen to illustrate the skills they have learned.

Conclusion

This assignment should have taught the students several things. Not only did the students learn how to make a grilled cheese sandwich, they acquired skills on how to use a sequences of steps and why it is important to follow the steps every time. The students have learned how important follow safety tips of using the stove to prepare food. They  also learned why you should wash your hands before and after preparing food. This hand on activity is just the beginning, once the students have mastered this activity they will have the ability to independently make other meals.

The student enjoyed completing this activity. This was a fun way to teach students how to make a grilled cheese and learn safety tips of using the stove. The students loved the opportunity to eat their classroom lesson.
