Task
As you may or may not know our world is not doing well. This is primarily due to the fact that many people (especially from our region of the world) have an unsustainable ecological footprint.
The simplest way to define ecological footprint would be to call it the impact of human activities measured in terms of the area of biologically productive land and water required to produce the goods consumed and to assimilate the wastes generated. Basically that means how much land and water do each of us need to live the life we live.
We are going to be calculating out ecological footprint and discovering what makes it so big and what we could do to reduce it.
Process
Go to https://www.footprintcalculator.org/home/en
Move down to the map and click on Calgary (it will give us the most accurate results).
Then click on kids' Version
Then on detailed version.
Create your avatar - if you are spending your entire time working on your avatar you will be just using the default.
Answer all the questions as honestly as you can - if you don't know an answer please ask ME!!!!
Once you have completed your survey, print off your results and hold onto them.
Then change only one variable at a time and check how your results differ.
Then answer the questions on the Evaluation Tab.
Evaluation
Answer all questions on a google doc. Make sure to number your answers and answer the questions fully!!!!
1) How big is your Ecological Footprint?
2) To have a sustainable world means that every person's ecological footprint should be around 1.5 global hectares (this is shrinking everyday as the population increases).
That means that if you have an ecological footprint of 3 and everyone else in the world lived like you did we would need 2 worlds to sustain us all (3/1.5=2).
Figure out how many worlds it would take if everyone lived like you did?
Divide your ecological footprint by 1.5
3) Do you think this is fair that we can live how we do and others aren't able too? Why or why not?
4) What variable did you notice change your ecological footprint results the most?
5) What did it change to?
6) Would you be willing to make this change? Why or why not?
7) What would you have to change in order to have an ecological footprint under 1.5? (Be Specific)
8) Would you be willing to make that change why or why not?
