Capitalism's Toll on American Society

Introduction

Hello and welcome to Chicago's grueling stockyards! During the early 1900's, the United States was heavily influenced by capitalism. You and your peers have read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and the book laid the foundation as to how society was like during this harsh time period. Task

This assignment is meant to be enjoyable and to further your knowledge of the progressive era. Your task for this assignment is to identify the strengths and weaknesses of capitalism and how it affects the social class that you are assigned during this time period. In order to receive credit, you must present a Google Slide presentation.

PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 10 slides minimum (including the cover slide)
  •   Images and visual representations must be appropriate to this time period
  • Content and data must be accurate

Process

                           

The class will be divided for this assignment. You and three others will be assigned into a group to complete this assignment. 

As stated previously, your task is to create a Google Slide presentation about the wealthy/poor and how capitalism affected that social class. The amount of work must be distributed fairly and if anyone problems occur, send me an email and I will be sure to deduct points. You will be given the same grade as your group members for the overall project so be sure to do your best! 

In order to guide you in the right direction, I have provided a list of links that will be able to assist you, if needed. You are able to use a variety of sources and not limited to the links provided. It is highly suggested that you have a good understanding of capitalism due to the questionnaire portion at the end of the presentation.

  • You will be graded individually when it comes to participation
    • however, the overall grade for the project itself will be the same

Hopefully this assignment helped broaden your knowledge about the progressive era and how the economic system affected the American society. I hope you enjoyed this assignment and The Jungle because this novel opened the eyes of many to the harsh realities of the corruption that was being withheld throughout the United States. Be thankful that the meat packing industry was exposed!
