Unsaturated hydrocarbons

Introduction

Unsaturated hydrocarbons are hydrocarbons that have double or triple bonds between adjacent carbon atoms.

There are 3 types of unsaturated hydrocarbons :

  • alkanes
  • alkenes
  • alkynes

Those with at least one carbon-to-carbon double bond are called alkenes and those with at least one carbon-to-carbon triple bond are called alkynes.

Task

  1. What kind of bonds are in alkenes?
  2. What kind of hydrocarbon is found in liquid fats?
  3. What kind of bond are in alkynes?
  4. When naming unsaturated hydrocarbon, do you put an ending -ene if there is a double bond?
  5. Do double and triple bonds have to be in the chain even if it is not the longest?

Process

The exercise contains of 6 questions. All of the questions are taken from the video you watched.

Answer should not be longer than one sentence.

Evaluation

Answers to the questions:

  1. Double bonds
  2. Alkenes
  3. Triple bonds
  4. Yes
  5. Yes

If you have 3 or more incorrect then watch the video and try the test again.

Conclusion

Hydrocarbons are the basis of organic chemistry. It is important to perfect the fundamentals right in the beginning to understand organic chemistry better.
