Aromatic hydrocarbons

Introduction

Aromatic hydrocarbons are those which contain one or more benzene rings. The name of the class come from the fact that many of them have strong, pungent aromas.

Aromatic hydrocarbons stable (meaning harder to break) depends on the composition, based on the number of bond, also how it is made - in line or in ring. For example more stable will be the one who have 2 or more bonds and it will be made in ring.

List of Aromatic Hydrocarbons (not all of them):

Benzene - is simple and smallest aromatic compound with six carbon atoms.

Naphthalene (in picture scheme) Naphthalene - is used in production of dyes, solvents production, also used as a remedy against moths.

Toluene (in picture scheme) - is used in production of dyes, cures, explosive.

Xylene (in picture scheme)   - isomer mixture is used as a solvent.

Anthracene (in picture scheme) - is used in production of dyes, smoke screens, scintillation counter crystals, and in organic semiconductor research.

Circle the correct answer (there is only one right).

Or finish the sentences.

Process

1. Which one is more stable (from photo)?

2. Justified why it is more stable than others (justified the one you choose)?

Letter ____ is more stable than others because _____

3. Which one is from aromatic hydrocarbons section?

   A) Propane

   B) Xylene

   C) Alkene

4. Which one aromatic hydrocarbons are shown in this picture   ?

   A) Toluene

   B) Benzene

   C) Anthracene

5. For what is used naphthalene?

   Naphthalene is used for______

Evaluation

Right answers:

1. C

2. C is more stable because it is made of double bonds and also it is a ringed compound.

3. B

4. A

5. Naphthalene is used in production of dyes, solvents production, also used as a remedy against moths.
