Organic compounds & organic chemistry

Introduction

Hello! In this WebQuest you will find out what are organic compounds and organic chemistry. Down below you'll be able to read what exactly are they and then watch a video to understand even better.

Organic compounds

An organic compound is virtually any chemical compound that contains carbon. Methane ,CH4,  is one of the simplest organic compounds.

Molecules associated with living organisms are organic. These include nucleic acids, fats, sugars, proteins, enzymes and hydrocarbon fuels.

  • DNA
  • table sugar or sucrose, C12H22O11
  • benzene, C6H6
  • methane, CH4
  • ethanol or grain alcohol, C2H6O

Organic chemistry

Organic chemistry is the study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation of carbon-containing compounds, which include not only hydrocarbons but also compounds with any number of other elements, including hydrogen (most compounds contain at least one carbon–hydrogen bond), nitrogen, oxygen, halogens, phosphorus, silicon, and sulfur.

Please provide answers as asked in the question (choosing the correct answer from three given or write your own).

Evaluation

The correct answers to the exercise :

  1. Friedrich Wöhler
  2. Biological
  3. Hydrocarbon
  4. Four
  5. One carbon atom
  6. Meth - 1 atom, But - 4 atoms, Prop - 3 atoms
  7. Alkanes are always named based on the longest possible continuous chain in their structure.
  8. The burning of alkane is called combustion.
  9. Halogenation means replacement of hydrogen atoms with halogens.
  10. C2H6 stands for ethane.

Conclusion

Organic compounds are important because all living organisms contain carbon. The carbon energy cycle of carbohydrates is known as not only in organisms but also in fossils, fuels becoming petroleum and natural gas.  Diamonds, are composed of a carbon compressed under great pressure. Plastics are composed of carbon polymers. As you can tell - carbons are almost the foundation of everything.
