Introduction
It is important to learn about atrocities like the Holocaust and to educate those who come after us so that we do not repeat the mistakes of past generations. Completing this WebQuest is a step in that direction. You have been captured by the Nazi soldiers during WWII. You are being held at Auschwitz
concentration camp. There seems to be no escaping from the camp.
As you meet new people at the camp, you hear there is a secret passage near the railroad coming into the camp.
All you have to do is complete four activities to gain the secret passcode to give the guard to enter the passage and begin your escape. Good Luck!
Task
You will be completing 5 activities to receive a special code. After completing each activity, the teacher will give you a letter towards the code.
Activity 1: Video & discussion
Activity 2: Summarizing
Activity 3: Storyboards
Activity 4: Map Labeling
Activity 5: Acrostic Creations
Some websites you may want to visit to get a better picture of the Holocaust and what Yanek lived through in the concentration camps.

Process
Learning Activity 1--View the 2 videos together.
http://www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/videos/prisoner-b-3087
Turn and talk to another person: "Would you have survived? Why or why not?"
Learning Activity 2--Reading/Writing/English
Having read Chapters 1-5 of the book Prisoner B-3087, write a summary of each chapter using Google Docs. Make sure you include the Chapter number, 10 sentences for each chapter, and use correct grammar and punctuation.
Learning Activity 3--Art, Reading, Writing, Storyboards
Read Chapters 6-10. After completing each chapter, fill out your storyboard.
- Write one line from the chapter at the bottom of the square. Then design a picture to depict the line.
- On the back of the same square, write 5 facts/details about the chapter.

Learning Activity 4: Social Studies/Map skills
Read Chapters 11-18. After completing these chapters, label the outline map of Europe, label the countries listed on the worksheet attached. Also label the location of the concentration camps from the worksheet. Label with a star and initials for the camp. Use the following resources to help you.

Learning Activity 5: Assignment/Assessment/Summarizing Strategy
Finish reading Prisoner B-3087. Based on all the information you have gleaned from watching the videos, reading the book, summarizing, completing a storyboard, and labeling the map of Europe, create an Acrostic, using the word PRISONER B, to describe this horrific time in history. You can be specific to Jack Gruener (aka Yanek) and the book Prisoner B-3087, or about the Holocaust in general.
Example of acrostic: Challenging mice to dart away
Always bathing my fur to look my best
Tail, twitching and moving to and fro to let you know I'm a sassy CAT!!!

Conclusion
You have completed all the assignments for this webquest! Congratulations!
Now that you are free to give the pass code to the guard at the escape entrance, you can escape to the outside of the camp. But be careful, many people in the country still hate Jewish people and may turn you back in to the Nazis for a reward. Best of luck in you future. Try to help others escape the concentration camps by referring them to this webquest.
