Introduction

By now, you have already read the first six chapters of Chinua Achebe's classic novel Things Fall Apart. However, there are quite a few things in the book that are very unfamiliar to American audiences! For this WebQuest, you will be learning more about the context of the novel in order to better understand it.

Task

You will answer each of the questions below using the articles I have linked just before each question. Copy and paste the questions onto a Google Doc using Google Classroom and then type in your answers. All questions are worth 2 points each unless labeled otherwise.

This WebQuest will be due Friday.

Site 1:

1. What is the capital of Nigeria?

2. When did the British gain control of Nigeria?

3. When did Nigeria regain its independence?

4. What are some ongoing problems the people of Nigeria face?

Site 2

1. Which tribe was Chinua Achebe born into?

2. Which books was Achebe unhappy about, and why did he dislike them?

3. What was Achebe's role in the Biafran civil war?

Site 3:

1. In 3-4 sentences, describe the kola nut ceremony in Igbo culture. (4 points)

2. What do the Igbo call their traditional creator god?

3. What traditional Igbo food would you most like to try?

4. What happens during a traditional masquerade? What is the purpose of those masquerades?

After answering these questions, please write 250 words about what you learned about today and the connections you have seen between what you researched and what you have read so far in the book. (6 points)
