Introduction
Do you want to have the energy to do your best at sports?
Does doing well in school work interest you?
Do you want to find out how to be the healthiest you that you can be?
In this webquest you will find all the answers to these questions and more as you work with your group to learn how to be healthy and physically fit.
Let’s begin our search to find the best way to be the best YOU!
Task
Groups will work together to complete the webquest and design a tri-fold presentation which will include:
Knowledge of myplate and the food groups
Names of each food group
Number of recommended servings of each per day
Recommended number of calories for your age
A depiction of a healthy plate of food
Knowledge of why exercise is important
Amount of daily exercise recommended for your age group
Examples of the different types of exercise and how they help your body
In addition to this trifold there are several small assignments and an experiment that must be completed.
Process
- First, you will be assigned to a group to work with.
- Next, you will need to complete some tasks.
The first task you need to complete is to go here and fill out the answers one at a time for each of your group members. You will need to measure each other’s height with the measuring tape. You will need to measure each other’s weight with the scale. As you enter each group member’s information you will click on “Calculate food plan” and then on “Your recommended calorie plan” You will need to print this because will use this to keep track of your food and exercise choices for 3 days.
Make sure this task is completed for each group member.
After you fill in the tracking sheet for 3 days, write a paragraph on how you did. Was it easy to make good food choices? Did you find things to eat that you enjoyed? Was it hard to exercise for the recommended amount of time each day? Include all of this in your paragraph as well as anything else you found interesting. The paragraph should be neatly written and include 5-7 full sentences and proper punctuation and capitalization.
Turn this paragraph and your completed tracking sheet in by Friday to Mrs. Gideon. Each group member should complete this paragraph independently.
The second task you need to complete is for each group member to choose a food group. The groups you choose from are: Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, Dairy, Protein foods. There will be an extra food group. One member of your group will need to do the work for this extra food group- Oils. Once you have chosen which food group each member will research, you need to go here . Each group member will need to place your cursor over the words “My Plate” at the top left of the banner.
As you do this, you will see all of the food groups appear below. Move your cursor to the food group you have chosen. Find out these things about your food group:
Which foods are included in your food group?
How much of this food group is recommended daily for your age?
What are the nutrients in your food group?
What are the benefits of eating the right amount of your food group?
After you find the answers to these questions, write a paper about what you have learned. You should have at least 2 paragraphs. Each paragraph should have at 5-7 full sentences with proper capitalization and punctuation. This paper can be neatly written on notebook paper or neatly typed and printed out. Make sure you have your name and group number on the top of your paper.
Each group member will complete their food group paper independently. These papers will then be put together and stapled to be turned in by Friday October 28th, 2016 to Mrs. Gideon.
Your third task is to learn all about exercise.
While writing your food group papers, you have learned that eating the proper foods and the proper amounts of those foods helps to keep your body healthy. But what is exercise? How does it help to keep you healthy? Go here and find the answers to these questions and more.
Get the exercise worksheet and fill in your answers. Turn this in to Mrs. Gideon by Wednesday, November 2nd. This task is worth a total of 22 points.
Your fourth task is to perform an experiment. Go here to get your directions. You will be discovering how bones support weight. The supplies for your experiment are waiting for you with your group number on them on the shelf in the classroom. Be sure to read and follow all of the directions carefully. Print out a copy of the directions for your group to fill out together. Remember that scientists carefully record their data. Choose the group member with the best handwriting to record your data on the recording sheet. Where the worksheets say ‘student’ cross this out and write in your group number. Your group will work together on this task and be graded as a group. Be sure to be a responsible group member and do your share of work! Turn in the completed worksheet to Mrs. Gideon by Friday, November 4th. This task is worth a total of 24 points and will be graded according to the rubric at the end of the pages you print for the experiment.
Your final task is to put all that you have learned together! Design a trifold board and show me what your group has learned. Be sure to include something from each task. Be sure to have titles for each task and include what you learned while completing that task. You can use pictures, drawings, and attach a written paper to show me what you have learned. Be creative! This is due by Friday, November 11th, 2016
