Task
One day at the airport, you see a man acting suspiciously. He appears to be watching people as
he hides behind a stack of suitcases. When he leaves, you look behind the suitcases.
There is a paper bag.
You open it.
Inside are just three ordinary items: a wristwatch, a coin (a nickel, to be exact), and a keychain.
Imme
diately, you realize this man is a SPY!!! You take the bag to a security officer, telling the officer "There was a man acting suspiciously...and he left this bag behind! It's proof he's a spy!"
The security officer cautiously opens the bag and laughs at you! The officer says "Ha! Look, kid, there's nothing in here but an old watch, a nickel, and a keychain. You've been watching too many spy movies. Unless you can prove these are spy tools, there's nothing I can do."
Your task is to write ONE paragraph which explains how a watch, a nickel, and a keychain can be used to spy on others. You must research this issue in EBSCOhost (which you are about to learn how to use). After you conduct your research, your final paragraph must include EVIDENCE from the research article for EACH of the three items (keychain, nickel, watch). Your paragraph must end with a CITATION of your source in proper MLA format, so the security officer knows that what you're suggesting is backed up by experts.

Process
The Deep Web is estimated to hold 90% of all the information on the Internet. That means free search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo are only searching about 10% of the Internet.
One of the best things you can find in the Deep Web are research databases. Click the link below to watch a two-minute video:
What's a research database? Why do I need one?
The research database that Cole Library provides for you is called EBSCOhost. There are three basic steps to using the database. Click each link below (in order) to see two-minute videos about the three steps:
1. FIND
2. READ
3. CITE
Information on the free web (searchable by Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.) can be written by anyone. Some of it is not even true.
Information in research databases (like EBSCOhost) on the deep web (searchable only if you
have a password) is PEER-REVIEWED. Peer reviewed means experts have read the information and have verified that it is accurate.
Now
that you are in eighth grade, you will be held to a higher standard of excellence in your research and your writing. You will be required to provide research evidence for your claims. EBSCOhost is a great place to do that!
Go to the suitcase at the front of the room. Open it, and take a paper that contains the remainder of your task. Follow directions carefully. Submit your completed task to Mrs. Sabol.
After you have your task instructions, click the link below to go to EBSCOhost. Use what you learned in the videos to navigate to the information you need. Your EBSOhost username and password are:
Username: cole
Password: crusaders
Evaluation
Use this rubric to see if your paragraph is logical enough to convince the security officer to find the spy.
