Everyone talks about eating healthy and going on fad diets, but what does eating healthy really mean? Counting calories... portion size... avoiding processed foods.... ahhhh!!! Isn't there a way to make my life healthier without being completely obsessed with what I eat?

Stress no more! Here is your chance to explore different ways to improve your eating habits.  

The purpose of this webquest is to open your mind about what you eat. I want you to be aware of what you put into your body and what it does for you. Sooner or later, YOU are going to be responsible for purchasing groceries and your HEALTH!

Process:

First...You will begin this journey by studying your eating habits for a period of one week (7 days). Record all the food you consume during this span of time. That means write down what ever you eat and drink for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and snack. Use the following chart to help you record.

Second...You need to have an understanding of what your body needs to function at a healthy level. The following websites will get you started in terms of providing you with basic knowledge regarding nutrition. Please utilize the following websites to answer these questions.

What is the daily reccomendation for the serving sizes for each of the (5) food groups for your age and gender group?

Please familiarize yourself with this article. It will break down how foods are identified in terms of nutrition labels. It will help you better understand the 5 essential nutrients.  

Third...Imagine that you are off to college next year and now you have to provide food for yourself! Plan a tentative week worth of meals. Be sure to inculde all of the food groups and portion sizes every day. You may either use a chart or simply write out.

Now that you've completed tasks 1-3, it's time for you to compare and contrast your nutrition log to your 1-week meal plan. Answer the following questions:

           1. What foods did you notice were on both lists?

           2. What foods did you eat in your nutrition log that you did not include on your 1-week meal  plan? Why didn't you include it?

          3. What foods did you include in your 1-week meal plan that you didn't have in your nutrition log. 

          4. What food group(s) do you need to improve on the most? The least?

          5. How will you be able to maintain these new eating habits into your daily life?
