Introduction
Greetings Meteorologists!
You have been invited by the National Weather Service to try out for a spot on their junior meteorologist team! In order to try out you will need to utilize what you have learned so far this quarter as well as research from this web quest to put together a presentation on the weather trends for a city of your choice.
To begin your webquest, click on "TASK".
Task
Task 1:
Where in the World?
- To begin, decide on a city that you would like to complete your research on. You will then track data for this city for the next five days. You will use the same website that we have used to track our own weather this quarter. http://www.weather.com.
- Use the table provided on Google Classroom to help you organize your information. While you are completing task one, you may also work on task two to help you better understand the weather conditions in your area.
(Completion of this table will serve as your assessment for task 1.)
Process
Task 2:
Location, Location, Location
(fill out Task 2 document on Google Classroom)
- Using the following website, http://www.worldatlas.com/aatlas/findlatlong.htm to find the latitude and longitude points for your city. Round the latitude and longitude numbers to the nearest whole number.
- What hemisphere is your city located? Use this link to help you determine which hemisphere you are researching. http://www.studyzone.org/testprep/ss5/b/comcontocheml.cfm
- What season is your city currently experiencing? Use the following website to help you come to a conclusion on the season. Be sure that you can explain how you know what the season is and why you know this. http://www.kidsgeo.com/geography-for-kids/0017B-reasons-for-the-four-seasons.php
Evaluation
Task 3:
Clouds
(Use the table from Google Classroom for Task 3. This will serve as the second part of your assessment for task 3.)
- We have discussed the different types of clouds as well as how they form. Create a concept map of your choice from the number that we have studied this year. This is part one of your assessment for this task. You can do this on a piece of notebook paper or on the iPads or Chromebooks. Be sure that you describe the important aspects of each cloud that distinguishes itself from the others. Use the following website to help you with this task. http://www.weatherwizkids.com/weather-clouds.htm
- Once you have described the different types of clouds, hypothesize what type of cloud you believe could be seen in your city on each day that you recorded. Explain how you have come to this understanding using the chart provided. Once you have explained the clouds for each day, find a picture to go along with what you have predicted.
Conclusion
Create! Now that you have your data as well as information regarding where your city is located and the season that it is experiencing, it is time to create your presentation for the National Weather Service. You have a number of choices of how you put together your presentation.
You may choose from the following mediums to present:
- Google Slides
- Seesaw
- iPad app
- Poster
- Write a script of what a meteorologist would say to the audience of a television cast for each day.
The next page, Credits, is where the rubric is located for you to see how you will be evaluated. There is also a place for you to record your self-assessment.
