Distance and Midpoint Trip WebQuest!

Introduction

Today you and a partner will use the Distance and Midpoint Formulas to calculate a Trip around our beautiful country!

The purpose of this WebQuest is to provide a tutorial lesson on distance and midpoint formulas and to correlate those formualas to real world applications.

You will work with a partner to select a destination within the USA.  The final product will be a glog using newhive.com which will provide an overview of the destination they chose.

Task

Students will work collaboratively with a partner to plan a trip to a destination within the USA.  But first, you all must complete the online tutorial on calculating distance and midpoint formulas.  Each person should complete the corresponding worksheets and some additional problems given to you by Coach Raber.  Once you have selected your destination, students will find places of interest along the way.  Each team will create a glog to showcase their trip!

Process

1.Select a partner that will allow you to stay on task.

2. Review the Distance and Midpoint Webquest on Coach Raber's website, take notes and complete practice problems. You will keep the notes, and turn in the practice problem. Each person needs to turn in the practice problems.

3. Choose a destination of interest to both of you.  Calculate the total distance from Jay M. Robinson High School.  You can use Google Earth (http://www.google.com/earth/index.html) or AAA (http://carolinas.aaa.com/Pages/Home.aspx?zip=28223) to plan your trip.  Be sure to provide details as to why this destination was selected.

4. Find some additional places of interest along the way.  One of the places of interest should represent the approximate "midpoint" of the trip (include the measurement).  Be sure to collect photos to share.  Keep in mind that the cost of the trip is irrelevant so splurge on CCS!

5. Create a Newhive presentation (https://newhive.com/b/) to highlight your trip.  Be as create as you like using pictures and descriptions.  Be sure to include the distance and midpoint formulas within the presentation.

6. Each person should write a reflection that ties the key learnings of this project together.

Evaluation

The following rubric will be used to evaluate each team and the contribution made by each team member.  Each student will receive an individual score for calculating the distance and midpoint problems from the Webquest. Be sure to keep the follow along notes from the Webquest.  Your group participation score will be determined by how well everyone stays on task and the contributions made by each of you to the project.  To evaluate the overall effectiveness of this project, your reflection will be scored based on how well you are able tie the key learnings to real world experiences.

Evaluation Rubric

Online tutorial and completion of randomly selected problems Student was not able to complete any (1-3) distance and midpoint problems accurately. Student was able to complete some (4-7) distance and midpoint problems accurately. Student was able to complete most (8-11) distance and midpoint problems accurately. Student was able to complete all (12) distance and midpoint problems accurately.

Destination selection, description, points of interest, and distance & midpoint identified Student did not select a destination, points of interest, and the total distance nor midpoint was identified. Student selected a destination, provided some detail about the destination and points of interest, and partly provided the total distance & mnidpoint. Student selected a destination, provided several details about the destination and points of interest, and provided the total distance & midpoint. Student selected a destination, provided numerous details about the destination and points of interest, and provided the total distance & midpoint.

Group Participation Student did not work effectively with others. Student cooperated with partner, but needed prompting to stay on task. Student was an engaged partner but had trouble listening to his/her partner and/or working cooperatively. Student was an engaged partner, listening to suggestions of his/her partner, and working cooperatively throughout the lesson.

Glog and Reflection The glog appears to be unorganized, difficult to follow, and the student did not complete the reflection. The glog appears in an organized fashion, but was difficult to follow at times, and wrote 1-3 sentences for the reflection. The glog appears in an organized fashion that was easy to follow and wrote 3-5 sentences for the reflection. The glog is very thorough with numerous examples and wrote more than 5 sentences for the reflection.

Total Score:

Conclusion

Upon completion of this assignment, each student should be able to calculate the distance and midpoint of two points.  The student should be able to correlate the points to destinations showing real world application.  Students should have a better understanding of how midpoint and distance formulas are used in every day life.  They also, hopefully, discovered some new places of interest in which they will visit in the future.
