Introduction

Learning Outcomes

Established Goal(s): Google sheets will be used to drive the assessment of skills in this lesson.

ISTE NETS and Performance Indicators for Students

1. Creativity and Innovation

a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes

b. create original works as a means of personal or group expression

c. use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues

5. Digital Citizenship

b. exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity

6. Technology Operations and Concepts

a. understand and use technology systems

ISTE NETS and Performance Indicators for Teachers

2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity

b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress

c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles.

Understanding(s):

Students will understand that there is a specific method for solving inquiry in science and it must be followed in order.

Essential Question(s):

How important is the order of the Scientific Method?

How do Scientists use the method to solve inquiries?

What is a hypothesis and how is it written?

Students will know...

Basic terminology including:

Science, Investigation, Hypothesis and Conclusion.

How to enter information into a document and share the document with an email address.

Students will be able to...

Set up an investigative question and use the steps of the Scientific Method to solve said inquiry.

Know what to do when the conclusion does not support the hypothesis

Troubleshoot basic computer issues with Google Sheets

Outcomes:

Assessment Evidence

Performance Task(s):

Students will research their hypothesis and complete the six slides labeled with each step of the method. Students will perform basic data entry, image input and create a theme for their presentation.

Using a Rubric, the student will be able to complete the objective and solve the task.

Other Evidence:

Students can present work, explain the method or complete a google forms quiz.

Learning Plan

Story Board-Kidd TEC 551 3

Students will be provided with a basic tutorial of Google slides using an autobiography lesson to provide an example. Students will complete the autobiography and present it. Students will complete the Scientific Method lesson and complete a presentation once their hypothesis has been approved by the instructor.

Scientific Method: (shared with kkidd@hbcsni.org when completed)

Step 1: Ask a question: Which product has more sugar, fruit punch Kool-Aid or cola?

Step 2: Hypothesis: If coke burns longer, it has more sugar than Kool-Aid.

Step 3: Conduct an experiment: Time how long it takes to burn each product.

Step 4: Collect data: Coke took less time, therefore it has less sugar than Kool-Aid.

Step 5: Analyze the information: In 10 trials, the results showed the same outcome.

Step 6: Communicate: I will post a video on my online channel saying that the experiment came out in the way that I believed it would.

Task

Welcome to the Scientific Method:

Today, you will learn about the method that almost everyone uses, even if they don't realize it, to solve issues.

Here are some great videos that describe the method:

Using these videos, complete the template below with your own experiment:

Process

The steps of the Process:

Using this animation, you will be able to not only identify and explain the vocabulary in this  unit, but also apply it to real world scenarios.

Evaluation

Complete the Quiz at:

When you are finished, email me the results.

Conclusion

You will now be able to conclude whether or not you feel comfortable explaining the Scientific Method.

Your final test is going to include application. If you can solve a real world problem, then you are able to use it for what it authentically was created for.

So why does the grass grow?

What is the color of the ocean?

Why does your dog/cat do that?

Each solution will come from the Scientific Process that is:

The video of element of the Scientific Method demonstration will include the prompt: “Does it sink or float?” Proposing a question to students on whether the object will sink or float when placed in fresh water vs. salt water. This video was completed by the spokesperson and creator of the project, Katherine Kidd and her daughter Lizzy. The web video was produced by an apple recorder and uploaded as a movie file under a Windows interface that uses blue tooth capabilities. The videos are meant for demonstration of the Scientific Method, identification of variables, and creating room for brainstorming and inferencing the vocabulary that was previously covered.
