Introduction
Classical music has been divided into six different periods. Each period has characteristic features that set it apart from the other periods. Most of our well-known composers belong to one of these six periods and helped to define that particular era of music. These periods were also shaped by many historical events which must be understood in order to truly gain an understanding of these different periods of music. The goal of this webquest is to familiarize you with these six periods so that you can understand them and share what you have learned with your classmates.
Task
In groups, you will create a slideshow to present to the class. Each group will be assigned one musical period, and each member of the group will be expected to contribute an equal amount of work .
Process
1. Your first slide or set of slides will be about the time period, not necessarily about the music. Think about historical context: what was going on at that point in history? This part doesn't have to be about music, but try to think about how the history could relate to the music created during that time period.
2. The second slide or set of slides should also include three characteristic instruments on each period. There is a list of websites below to reference instruments and historical events. You might have to do some online research to make sure you have the correct events and instruments.
3. The Next slides that follows should contain UNIQUE musical Characteristics of the "Era"
4. The final slides will be about the composers. There is a list of eras and composers below, as well. You'll need to include:
- when/where was the composer born? when/where did the composer die?
- 3-5 interesting facts about the composer's life.
- Find and include at least one picture and one listening sample from your composers.
- You will need to use a link to include the listening.
5. Be sure to have an clear Conclusion/End Slide that sums up your presentation.
Musical Eras - next to each title, you'll find the number of people for each group:
