My assessment- Weight Training

Introduction

My students have been working hard in the weight room for the last three weeks participating in different workouts that I have created for them.  These workouts vary every day depending on the muscles we are working.  Exercises and the amount of time spent on each muscle will vary also.  I also like to put my students through different workouts that work on muscular strength and some that work on muscular endurance. All workouts always relate to the FITT principle because the students will use this principle in their final assessment. I have found that students are more comfortable using this principle on the assessment if we use it daily in the weight room.

It is the final week of the unit and time for me to assess the students on all the information and skills they have learned up to this point.  My gifted students will have to construct a rubric that the teacher will use to grade them.

Task

Task:

Students have a lot of room to use their imagination and be creative with this assignment.  There are guidelines that the students need to follow but they are allowed to determine what they will be assessed on and how their assessment will look.

Guidelines (thing that need to be included):

  • Muscles that are being worked
  • Specific exercises being used
  • Matching exercises with correct muscle
  • FITT principle
  • Correct use of the FITT principle (through demonstration)

Students will have fifteen minutes to present and demonstrate to the teacher.  All of the guidelines have to be included along with the rubric the student constructed.

Process

Below are a list of resources that are acceptable to use to help create the student's rubric.  It is up to the student to decide what specifically they will be graded on but they must follow the guidelines when creating the rubric.  Check out some of the great websites that can help you get started!

Evaluation

The student will be responsible for designing a rubric that they will provide for the teacher to guide them in grading.  The teacher is giving complete control to the students because of how well they have done in class.  I feel that these chosen students can complete this task and produce quality work because they move much faster in class than the others.  Below are examples of websites that the students can use to get help creating a rubric as well as some sample rubrics.

Conclusion

One of the first things anyone needs to do before working out is establish their goal. Are you trying to lose weight, burn fat, gain weight, add muscle, etc?  Workouts can be done many other places than a gym or fitness center.  A lot of workouts can actually be done at home!  The most important thing to do is always base your workouts off of the FITT principle (example listed below).  I have also included some helpful workout websites below.

FITT Principle:

F = Frequency. How often does the workout get done during the week.  Recommended:3-5 days

I = Intensity. How hard does a person work out?  You can measure the intensity of a workout by an individual's heart rate

T = Time. How long is your workout?

Weight- 1-2 minutes per muscle

Cardio- at least 20 minuts

T = Type.  What type of workout you do.

Examples: Cardio, weight training, circuit training, zumba, water aerobics, etc.
