Amazon Rainforest

Introduction

Welcome to the Amazon Rainforest!

The Amazon Rainforest is the home to millions of species, particularly endangered species.  You will work in a small group to find information about the rainforest and answer the following questions.

  • What are the characterstics of a tropical rainforest?
  • Where are tropical rainforests located around the world?
  • What is the climate like?
  • Describe the 4 layers of the rainforest.
  • What kind of animals reside there? What predators should you worry about?
  • How are the animals different from those in North Carolina?
  • Are there people that live in the rainforest?
  • What is deforestation? Why is it harmful?

  •

Task

You and your team members must decide which scientist you will be. Each scientist will be responsible for answering certain questions.  Below are links to the planning sheet for each team member.

Zoologist's Planning Page

Biologist's Planning Page

Attention Team Members:
The links with easier reading levels are listed first for all scientists. The reading level gets higher as you progress down the column through the other links. If you need help reading any of the information, please let me know.

Each member of your team will become an expert on the information they are researching. The anthropologist should research the different people that live in the rainforest along with their food, clothing and shelter. The botanist should begin researching the plants that live in the rainforest. The zoologist should begin researching the animals that live in the rainforest.  The biologist should also help the the botanist and the zoologist research the plants and animals that live in the rainforest. As you do your research, make sure you take good notes.

Process

You and your group will create a Powerpoint presentation about the preparations you will make for this upcoming journey in the Amazon Rainforest.  Each member in the group will be responsible for learning about a different aspect of preparing for the journey:

  • Botany Expert:  This person will be gathering information about the different plants you will encounter in the rainforest.  They will gather images and information about many common plants in the rainforest, both plants that are good and bad.
  • Biology Expert:  This person is in charge of gathering images and pictures of the animals of the rainforest.  The threats to their survival as well as which animals may be a problem when living in the rainforest.
  • Geography Expert:  This person is in charge of learning everything about the Amazon's weather.  What kind of climate will you encounter.  This person is also responsible for finding out why the rainforest is becoming more endangered each day.
  • People Expert:  This person is in charge of finding out about the natives who live there.  What do these people call themselves?  What is their culture like?  What is the population?  Images and information are needed.
