Choose MyPlate

Introduction

This WebQuest will help you become familiar with the government website ChooseMyPlate.gov. By being familiar with this site you will be able to create many age appropriate activities and create exciting lesson plans for your early childhood classroom. Nutrition is an important part of a child's development and it's your job to help them learn how to live a healthy lifestyle!

Task

Your task will be to find materials to use in your early childhood classroom. Upon completion of this WebQuest you will have collected all the materials needed to teach your little ones about health and nutrition. You will create a slide presentation that can be used in your early childhood classroom.

Process

Step 1: Open Google Slides to begin making a presentation consisting of the items you are about to collect.

Step 2: Start by going to http://www.choosemyplate.gov/ and reading What is MyPlate? Summarize the information to make it age appropriate for Preschoolers. On this slide, add a graphic of MyPlate.

Step 3: Follow the link https://www.myplate.gov/life-stages/preschoolers to the section concerning Preschoolers. After locating this section, choose one of the handouts about picky eaters or helpful/hurtful phrases and put a screen shot or link of the handout in your presentation. On you slide Copy and Paste 5 sentences that you find helpful or interesting.

Step 4:https://www.choosemyplate.gov/resources/myplate-tip-sheets  Review each of the infographics on this link (page 1 and 2) and choose 2 that you would like to share with families in your classroom. You can paste the links into your slide. Then explore the other tips and information sheets and chose one that would be helpful to you now and one that would have been helpful to you as a child. These can be from any of the pages...there are a lot!

Step 5: Use the OK DHS Licensing Requirements https://oklahoma.gov/content/dam/ok/en/okdhs/documents/okdhs-publication-library/14-05.pdf to plan a breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack for a preschool class. Be sure to follow the guidelines. Put the menu plan in your presentation.

Step 6: Find 3 printouts available on http://www.choosemyplate.gov/  that would be helpful to hang up in your classroom or hand out to parents. Put a picture of each in your presentation with a link to access them.

Step 7: Complete your presentation. Remember to add a title slide and a references slide. Turn in on Jupiter. Make sure I have access to view.
