The Caribbean is a diversity of cultures from across the world. Each of the Caribbean islands has a unique and distinct cultural identity that was molded by early European colonialists, the African slave trade, as well as indigenous Indian tribes. Its rich culture is not confined to the food, dress, language, music and dance. The families across the Caribbean practice different variations of the culture and this includes family unions. Family unions speak to the how the family is formed. In the Caribbean there are three main ways by which the family comes together. these include: legal marriages, visiting relationships and common-law unions.

In the visiting relationship the visiting parent is not necessarily counted as a family member since he or she is  not in permanent residence in the household. In such a household the family is a single-parent family.

Common-Law Unions

In these unions the couple are not married but they do share a common residence and have sexual relations.
