Task

Go to the following website and click on the tab "Essential Questions".

Pick one of the areas and find 5 things that you didn't know AND are willing to {possibly} try over the next school year. We will use these to narrow down to 3 goals you work on for this school year-yes they can be used in your PDP.

Process

Now that you have found your 5 things, see if any of them can be combined-if so combine them.

How can you use these things to help your students with special needs in the classroom?

Go back to http://serge.ccsso.org/ and as a table group see if you can answer the original questions from slide one.

Evaluation

As you can see all the administrators/evaluators are here today. The reason they are here is to help you with your PDP.  They are asking that at least one of your PDP goals for this school year be based on your interactions with students with special needs.  This means that as a general education teacher you will interacting with students with disabilities and Admin wants you to have a goal that incorporates how you will work with that student AND what can they (admin.) do to support you?  When you are done writing your goal (with your admin)-that will be your exit ticket today.  Again remember we don't expect you to be experts, we just want to support you as more and more students are being mainstreamed into the general education setting.

Conclusion

  • As a General Education Teacher What Am I required to Do? You are required to follow the IEP accommodations and modifications.  You are required to stay in communication with the special education sponsor teacher/case manager.  You are required to fill out any and all paperwork (by the due date) pertaining to the student.  You are required to notify the sponsor teacher/case manager as soon as anything with the student changes (negatively or positively-academic or behavioral).
  • Who will help me with all the extra work? The sponsor teacher/case manager will be there to help you, whether it is to modify an assignment, grade an assignment, lesson planning, parental contact, sometimes even just to come sit with the student if need be. Just about anything you need the sponsor teacher/case manager is there to support you.  Within the first ten days of school you should be notified who the students are in your classes that have IEPs and who their sponsor teacher/case manager is.  If you do not get that information by the 10th day of school please contact me, Elizabeth Montoya at ext. 5035. By the 10th day you should also receive a modifications page for each student, again if you don't please contact me.
  • What happens if I don't do it? If you do not follow the IEP and support the student(s) with disabilities you are in violation of federal law, and yes your license can be revoked.  Please come see me if you are having any difficulties that you feel are not being resolved by the sponsor teacher/case manager.  We do not want to get to the point of you being put on an improvement plan and possibly having your license revoked.  I have to also say that the district no longer supports teachers in law suits where they clearly and blatanyly did not follow the IEP after several warnings and interventions.  Remember our students are here to be supported in their education and sometimes that means different things in different ways-even different than what we are used to.
  • Who do I talk to if I don't understand something or there is a problem? Again the sponsor teacher/case manager is going to be your first point of contact and then me.  If I am not resolving the issue please go to Mr. Black {the principal}.
