Earth's Severe Weather

Introduction

Welcome, meteorologists!

Living here, in sunny southern California, it might be hard to believe but the world has many different types of weather. I know that you mostly see warm and sunny weather all year round, but in most parts of the world, and of the United States, that is not the case! There is rain, snow, wind, and cold. There are also many types of severe weather, such as hurricanes, tornados, and tsunamis. Get ready to explore all kinds of crazy weather and to investigate what they can tell us about climate change.

Happy researching, meteorologists!

Process

It is your job to investigate these three types of severe weather. Each task will include research about tornados, hurricanes, and tsunamis.

When you finish the tasks, you will complete an evaluation about severe weather.

Have fun, friends!

Evaluation

Well done! You made it to the final task!

Your job now is to create a presentation showing the three types of severe weather that you learned about during this webquest.

You should include:

- what the weather looks like

- where you might find it

- what causes it

- what your research has taught you about climate change

Be creative! You could make a poster or a PowerPoint presentation. Just make sure it is exciting! We will share them with each other in class next week. Don't forget to cite your evidence!

Conclusion

Your tasks are now complete but you are not done yet! I would like you to think about what you and your friends can do to help prevent climate change. Use your new knowledge to teach your friends about how we can help our Earth!

This webquest is designed for 5th grade students. It aligns with the standard for Earth Sciences 4c: Students know the causes and effects of different types of severe weather and how this relatese to climate change. This should be just a basic start to learning about severe weather and climate change. The evaluation project could be done individually or in pairs.
