Introduction

You will be exploring what an expression is, versus an equation, evaluating algebraic expressions, and learning a new language, the language of mathematics!
2b or not 2b? That is the expression. Or how about 2b is 2b. That is the equation.
We can translate and even evaluate the language of Mathematics, which is related to the English language believe it or not. Confused? That's ok, with the help of this webquest you will hopefully have a better understand when you reach the end.So embrace this journey and go exploring and when you get back you should have all the pieces of the "pi"!
Task
Your mission is to help the lost and confused students in the
dimension. To help them, you need to create one of the following items: 1)Song 2)Story 3)Cartoon In your creation you need to be able to speak the math language, show how it connects to the English language, and solve the math language. You also need to be able to show the difference between an expression and an equation. Good Luck!
Process

1. You will need to do some research on the language of mathematics and how to evaluate it. You must visit each of the links below first. Once you have visited all these links you may feel that you still need more information and choose to visit other links that are not listed to help you with your research.
Evaluating Algebraic Expressions: Link 1: Algebra Basics - Read through the examples here and practice. Do not click on the "next" button at the bottom of the problem. Click on the steps above the information. Show all work on the paper that you will hand in with your final project. Link 2: Evaluating Expressions video - You will need your headphones for this. Watch the video. See what you already know. Link 3: Substitution - this is how your evaluate. If you think you have it down, then you can scroll down and answer the questions at the bottom. Show all work on the paper that you will hand in with your final project. Link 4: Expression Basketball - play the game at least once, pair against pair. Show all work on the paper that you will hand in with your final project.
Vocabulary:
Link 5: Flashcards - see what you already know. Guess what the flashcards mean before flipping over. See what you remember from last year. Link 6: Language of Algebra - Again, click the steps above. Please read it all. Write down the terms that you think are key. You don't need to write the definitions, but you need to know what they mean. Show work as needed on the paper that you will turn in with the final project.
Translating:
Link 7: Translating notes - read the page on key words and translation. Then click page 2 at the bottom. Read the translation notes. At the bottom there are real world examples in links. Please pick 3 that you must look at and solve problems from. Show all work on the paper that you will turn in with your final project. Link 8: Translating Video - you will need headphones again or put it on quietly. Link 9: Translating notes/practice - read the notes if you need to at the top, but then complete the practice at the bottom. Write down all work on the paper that you will turn in with your final project. Link 10: Algebraic Expressions Billionaire - play the game - two on two. Don't spend much time choosing a character or editing it. Spend more time playing! Show any work on the paper that you will turn in with final projects.
2. Now you will need to create your story, song, or cartoon! If you are writing a story or a song, type it up in Google Doc and share it with me. My email address is mayhill_m@hcsb.k12.fl.us If you are doing a cartoon, you will need to go to www.storyboardthat.com to create your comic strip. Have fun and be creative!

Conclusion

Congratulations! You made it!
I can't wait to see your creations! Take a minute and write a reflection in a word document and share with me. If you have any other great ideas for this project in the future or places I can add to this site, please include them in your reflections!
