Similarities & Differences between BAPTISM & CONFIRMATION
|
We anoint in baptism as a sign of the Spirit of Love which is the way to holiness. |
|
| Those confirmed are marked in this sacrament, as at baptism, with the seal of the Holy Spirit and the sign of faith. |
|
|
|
Like baptism, confirmation is received only once because it marks us permanently in faith.
Task

Process
The Sacrament of Confirmation is the second of the three sacraments of initiation.
Confirmation follows on from Baptism. Through Confirmation a person of the Catholic faith is making their own commitment/promise to be part of the Catholic Church and follow the teachings of Jesus.
Confirmation perfects our baptism and brings us the graces of the Holy Spirit that were granted to the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday. It is most often associated with the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The Sacrament of Confirmation completes the sacrament of Baptism. If Baptism is the sacrament of re-birth., Confirmation is the sacrament of maturity and coming of age.
Confirmation is a sacrament of empowerment. It gives the strength to follow Jesus and to become involved in the mission which Jesus left to the Church.
The Church Teaches
(HOW) – the actions
Confirmation is a true sacrament instituted by Christ and different from Baptism. A person is confirmed by laying-on of hands and anointing with chrism oil accompanied by prayer.
We use oil to anoint. Anointing with oil is ancient and rich in meaning.
Oil is a sign of abundance and joy, according to the beautiful words of Psalm 23:
“You prepare a table before me…you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows!”
Oil cleanses and we bathe with it. We use it to soothe our muscles. It is a sign of healing.
It soothes our bruises and wounds. It makes radiant with beauty, health, and strength.
(WHO)
The chrism is blessed by the bishop and the bishop administers the sacrament. All baptized persons can and should be confirmed. The effect of the Sacrament of Confirmation is to give strength in faith.
The bishop anoints each on the forehead with chrism, saying as he does:
“Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Scripture reference.
“I have baptised you with water; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.” – Mark 13:11
Everyone who is baptized but not yet confirmed should receive this sacrament.
Without it, baptism is still valid and we are members of the church but initiation is incomplete.
