Introduction

Troy is the famous name of the Bronze Age city featured in the oral and literary tradition in Homer’s Iliad , telling the story of the Trojan War..... and for 3000 years it remained as just a story.
In 1868, with a shovel and the sense of adventure and fame, an English archaeologist Frank Calvert and Heinrich Schliemann, a wealthy German businessman, excavated trial trenches in a field at Hisarlık in the Troad section of what is known as Turkey. Today, the hill at Hisarlik has come to uncover IX layers of the epic city of Troy, each layer more mysterious then the last, just waiting for its secrets to be discovered.

Understanding Archaeology
Part A (Period 4)
Excavations at Mycenae

Homer described the city of Mycenae as "rich in gold" in his great epic poem The Iliad. According to the stories Mycenae was the legendary home of King Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks who went to Troy to fight in the Trojan War.
Using the links available in the "process" tab, plus looking through other websites, research and answer the following questions in the form of a power point presentation. Each question is to be placed as a heading on a new slide followed by your answer. Images may be used to help with your response. Remember to be creative in the way you present your response.
Questions:
1)What was the reasons for Schliemann to visit Mycenae and in what year?
2)What sites did he pay particular attention to?
3)Explain what he uncovered here?
4)What mistake did he make when claiming he found the death mask that belonged to Agamemnon?
5) What are the issues brought to light about the mask and Schliemann's claim?
6) How does Schliemann’s sensationalism (presentation of stories) impact on the validity (truthfulness) of his finds?
7)Based on your research discuss if Schliemann's excavation methods and recording techniques wer reliable?
8)Why does Schliemann remain a ‘controversial figure’?
Part B (Period 5)
Fakebook
Various excavators have played an important role in investigating the City of Troy. Yet all of them came before the time of Facebook. Your task is to select one of the 5 archaeologists and create a fake Facebook account within a PowerPoint file. Each slide will represent a new section of Facebook. For instance slide 1 will be the archaeologists name and profile picture, slide 2 will be a short biography of his personal details, slide 3 will be a list of his friends/family, slide 4 his status and so and so forth. Remember to be creative.
Your Fakebook will be presented in class during period 6 this Friday.
1. Heinrich Schlieman
2. Wilhelm Dorpfield
3. Frank Calvert
4. Manfred Korfmann
5. Carl Blegan
Your fake book account must include the general basics of a real Facebook account such as:
- Details of the chosen archaeologist in the form of a small biography (200 words) consisting of: when was he born, when did he die, who did he marry ,where he grew up, where he studied and any relevant information that lets us know who he is.
-A short friends list with photos
-Three statuses of about 200 words which explains his contribution to the investigation of Troy. (These can follow the process of his views and thoughts before excavating the site, as he began excavating the site and his excitement over what he found).
-1 or 2 "Selfies" (images) relevant to your page
If you have finished Part A and Part B....
Much controversy has surrounded Schliemann over the years.
Within a word document you are to present your thoughts based on your research and argue whether Schliemann was really no more than a fraud or the father of scientific archaeology, the pioneer of new science?
