Place Value

Introduction

ESSENTIAL QUESTION?

How do I identify the place and value of a number?

HMM...  That sounds like a question that I know you will be able to answer by the end of this webquest.  I know you can do it!

During this webquest, your job is to be student teachers.  That means you are still maintaining your role as a student, but you are also gaining a role of teacher.  You are going to have to teach your principal, Mr. Rodilas and other faculty members how a third grader learns place value and how you use it also.

Task

Your task is to complete various place value activities that demonstrate how you learn and use place value.  By the end, you will also have created your own number by identifying each place and the value of each digit in that particular number.

Process

  1. First you will be assigned a partner to complete our web quest.  You and your partner will have the role of student/teacher.  As the student you will demonstrate how you use place value.  As the teacher, your job will be to teach the principal, Mr. Smith and other grade level teachers in our school what a third grader knows about place value.  In that case, you and your partner will have to create a plan of how you will present this to Mr. Smith.  I would like you to be creative.  For example, you may create a power point that you will present to him, you can create a video using our classroom's digital camera and then upload to the computer, or you may simply e-mail him an outline of what you have completed in the web quest.
  2. Next, I have provided a checklist for you to check off the items as you complete them.  This will help you to keep track and make sure you do not forget any steps.  In order to check the items off you may print it out so you have access to it at all times.
  3. Your next job is to view the power point and make sure all steps are completed within the power point.
  4. Fourth. place value practice will need to be opened and completed. This can be completed right on the computer in microsoft word.
  5. For step five you will need to click on the linkbelow to watch the video clip. After you have viewed the video clip, you will need to answer the questions that are attached with the practice sheet at the bottom.
