Tech Savvy Newton

Introduction

Covington Square's wireless solution is not fullfilling its purpose in ensuring a secure, reliable, and fast network connection for residents on the go. Without even looking into their network, it is more than likely simply connected to the ISP (either Comcast or U-Verse) to the ~100mbps modem or modem/router solution that only has a medium range of coverage. With the current configuration the Covington Square can only hope to have 3/4 coverage area and horribly slow speeds due to overdue DHCP reservations for devices and bad device handling, as well as of course low signal.

This is what we hope to fix with the Tech Savvy Newton Project. Through proper network protocol and node configurations such as a star network or linear bus network. With properly configured networks Convington Square will be able to see fast and wide coverage for more residents to enjoy outside while staying connected to the rest of the world.

Task

Network Node Examples

There are many complex forms of network node configurations, basic examples are shown above with a visual representation to show how devices communicate and connect to the internet.

Process

Many solutions could be applied to fix Covington Square's networking issues. First off, an incorporation of Enterprise wireless access point(s) such as a bus node configuration in which the routers will be cascading to allow full coverage of the park. Second, a large access point could be placed in the very center of the squre, high in the air for full coverage, however it may not be a viable option due to obstacles and/or wiring issues. Doing so may require lining Cat6 or Cat5e (preferably) or even Cat5 ethernet cables along the telephones lines to the center of the square.

Evaluation

If Covington Square's current wireless configuration is using the router/modem provided by either Comcast or AT&T U-Verse we ask that you replace it if it is not 10/100/1000 (Gigabit) compatible. Many connected clients will require more avaliable channels for faster service to their devices. An Enterprise Networking Solution such as Ubiquiti Network's UniFi AC LR routers will put Covington Square on the right track along with a NETGEAR CM600 modem/gateway. The pricing for the router is $109.00 and the modem/gateway is $119.99. This $228.99 investment will be well worth the prosperity and enjoyment of Covington residents. Being able to access fast internet in the park will make them want to be more actively outside when they are able to contact their friends and loved ones when they need to without delay.
