Climate Zones, Plants and Animals of Australia and Indonesia

Introduction

Hello Year 3 :)

Welcome to your Geography Web Quest!

A web quest is a journey you will take through the use of internet sources to develop your understanding of the natural characteristics of environments. You will do this by identifying the major climate types, native plants and animals of Australia and Indonesia.

You will be investigating how the different climate zones and environments are suited to particular native plants and animals.

These web quest pages will guide you and support you as you undertake this journey. Good luck!

Task

Use the websites to help you answer the questions.

Use your research to help you complete the table of information.

Here is an example of what it will look like and how you might begin with it:

Country Climate Zone Environment Plants Animals
Australia Dry, very low rainfall Desert ? ?

Process

Go to http://www.gondwananet.com/australian-desert-plants.html and read about Australia's desert environments.

What is it about desert environments that makes it hard for plants to survive?

How have trees and shrubs adapted to live in desert environments? (Hint: What is special about their roots?)

Plants that store water in their leaves, fruit, stems or roots are called _______________ . To hold on to their water, these plants have ________,  ________ and __________leaves so that they lose only small amounts of water through their leaves. Some desert plants are nearly ________, some _____ their leaves and some _______their leaves during the dry periods.

Name one tree and one shrub we might find in the Australian desert.

What type of grass covers Australian deserts? What is it commonly known as? Draw and label a picture of what this grass looks like.
