American Symbols and What They Mean

Introduction

Kindergarten students will locate and identify important American symbols with the assistance of an adult (teacher, parents, grandparents, siblings).  Students will complete tasks that help explain the meaning of the symbols.  Symbols will include national and state (Georgia) flags; the bald eagle; The Statue of Liberty; Lincoln Memorial;and the Washington Monument.  Students should be able to identify the symbols as flags, monuments, etc.  Students may also be able to relate the symbols to various holidays.  This project may take some time to complete.  Due dates will be given at the discretion of the teacher.

TASK 6

Find your own information online about the White House, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Star Spangled Banner.  Be able to tell about each symbol and discuss its importance.  Design a way to share with other students and/or class.

Process

Task 1: United States Flag

Go to the United States Flag website.  Print a copy of the flag.  Color it after locating the following information.

What are some nicknames of the U.S. Flag?

What does the red color of the flag mean?

What does the white color of the flag mean?

What does the blue color of the flag mean?

Who has been giving credit for sewing the first American flag?

What does the American flag symbolize?

TASK 2:  Georgia State Flag

Go to the Georgia State flag website.  Answer the questions about the flag.  Download and print a copy of the flag.

When was the current Georgia State flag adopted?

What are the colors of the current Georgia State flag?

Tell about the seal found on the Georgia State flag?

How many white stars are shown on the Georgia flag?

What do the stars represent?

TASK 3: The Bald Eagle

Go to the first Task 3 website and read about the bald eagle.  

Write at least three sentences telling what you know about the bald eagle and why it is an American symbol.  

Next, go to the second Task 3 website.  

Download a picture of the bald eagle and color it.  If you can't download a picture, draw and color one using the pictures as examples.

Task 4: The Statue of Liberty

Go to the Statue of Liberty website.  

Watch the video.  You can watch more than one if you want.

Write a paragraph and tell what you learned about the Statue of Liberty.  

Include information about the two countries involved in building it.  

Also tell what the Statue of Liberty means to you and our country, the United States.

Go to the second Statue of Liberty website.  Download a picture to color or draw one of your own.

Give the websites time to load.

Task 5:  Lincoln Memorial & Washington Monument

You will compare and contrast how the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.  

How are the two American symbols alike?  How are they different.  

Create a poster or display to show how they are the same and different.  

Include information about how they were created, where they are located, and how old these two symbols are.  Use information found at the provided websites.

Task 6:  White House, Pledge of Allegiance, and Star Spangled Banner

Do a web search to find information about these three American symbols.  Create a project on your own that includes information, pictures, diagrams, etc.  Be prepared to present these to a group or your class.

Conclusion

Students will build a portfolio kept in the classroom by the teacher.  The portfolio will include all given assignments pertaining to important American Symbols.  Any extra information the students locate can be included in their portfolios.
