Introduction (Scenario)

Ms Blake, a grade 3 Teacher at the Santa Cruz All Age School invited a member from the Fire Department as a resource person to her Integrated Studies class when she was teaching the topic "Providers of Goods and Services" to give the students a first hand knowledge about what the job of a firefighter entails- who is a provider of services.

Task

Task

After having a discussion with the firefighter, students will be placed in groups of three, where they will be given specific tasks based on what was presented by Mr Pike.

Students should be able to:

  •       Explain at least three roles of fire fighters during a class discussion.

  •       Identify at least three fire equipment after viewing a chart. 

  •         Within five minutes role-play a fire scene during a group activity. 

  •        In two paragraphs write a story about the fire fighter.

Step 1:

Before Mr. Pike is introduced, the words of a song entitled “Fire! Fire!” will be displayed on a multimedia projector. Students will be guided through the vocabulary of the song after which it will be modeled by the teacher. The students will then be invited to join in the song the second time. The song  will be sang twice.

Step 2:

This will be followed by a class discussion to ascertain what the song was about. Students will be prompt to state the name of the worker who provides safety.

Step 3:

Mr. Pike will present to the class about the role of the firefighter.

Step 4:

The students will be placed into groups of three where they will be given tasks to complete based on what was presented by Mr. Pike.

Having invited the resource person to the Social Studies classroom, students through  the activites given, proved to acquire a good understanding of the roles of a of firefighter. Through the activities given, it was ascertained that many groups had emplarary, good and fair comprehension of the roles of the firefighter. No group scored unsatisfactory in any of the activies. So it is safe to say, that inviting the resource person was a higly effective way of teaching this Integrated Studies lesson.
