Hatchet Webquest

Introduction

Imagine being a 13 year old boy traveling all alone by plane over the Canadian wilderness to visit your father for the summer. Now, imagine that the pilot of the small plane you're traveling on has a heart attack midway through the flight. This is the horror that befalls Brian Robeson, the main character in Gary Paulsen's Hatchet. How will Brian survive? More importantly, will he?

You must keep a journal during this webquest. Your objective is to gather information from each stop. At the end of the webquest, use your knowledge to help Brian. Remember, the more knowledge you gather, the more you can help Brian.

Task

TASK 1

Your first stop is the oil fields of Canada.  The Mackenzie Delta contains a great deal of oil.  Go to http://www.google.com , click on maps. Locate 5 Canadian cities.  Draw a map of Canada in your journal, then mark the location of the 5 cities you found on your map.

Next pay a visit to http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/kids , scroll down to North America, click Canada, click on SIGHTSEEING GUIDE.

Answer  the following questions: 

1. What native Canadians occupied Nunavut? 

2. What does Nunavut mean?

3. What country settled Quebec city?

4.   What type of marine life might you see in Quebec City?

5.  What was Canada's first national park? 

6. What wildlife might you see there? 

Next click history timeline .  Choose 8 events from Canada's history and describe each.


Task 2:

Lets check out some airplane info.  Go to http://www.allstar.fiu.edu/aero/princ1.htm .  Draw a picture of a plane in your journal, and label the following; propeller, fuselage, right & left aileron, right & left flap, horizontal stabilizer, vertical stabilizer, rudder, and landing gear.  Next give a description of each.  Now that you know the basic parts of a plane, tell how it flies. Be sure to mention  the 4 forces of flight.  Finally explain the difference between VFR flying and IFR flying.


Task 3:

Ok, we know that Brian is alone in the wilderness.  Lets find some ideas to help him survive.  Go to http://www.equipped.com/kidprimr.htm .  

Answer the following questions:

1.What does S.T.O.P.  mean?  

2. Give two examples of a shelter you could make. 

3. How can you attract attention? 

4. What about water?  List three tips given about water.

Task 4:

What kind of animals are out there?  Go to http://www.animals.nationalgeographic.com .

  Look up and describe the following animals: moose, porcupine, wolf.

Include  size and weight, diet, lifespan, and at least three other facts per animal.


Task 5:

What if Brian gets hurt?  What should he do?  Go to http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/FirstAidIndex/FirstAidIndex

Give the first aid procedure for each of the following:

Blisters, bruise, cuts & scrapes, fever, frostbite, sprain, sunburn.


Congratulations on completing your journey! Your journal should be full of useful information, you will need it all to complete the Hatchet Challenge.

Process

You will now be put into groups of 4. You must work together discussing and covering all situations to create a PowerPoint Survival Guide. Your PowerPoint must have AT LEAST 10 slides and contain speaker's notes. Each slide must contain AT LEAST 1 picture.

Situations:

1. Brian's plane is losing altitude (height). How can he correct it, and return the plane to level flight?

2. He needs to find an airport to make an emergency landing. What Canadian city might have one?

3. Brian crash lands the plane in a clearing. What should he do to improve his chances of survival?

4. While getting firewood, Brian sprains his wrist. What should he do?

5. Brian notices moose in the area. Need he be concerened for his safety? Why or why not?

6. Brian finds some fishing line and hooks in the plane. While fishing in the nearby pond he cuts himself. What should he do?

Conclusion

In completing this WebQuest students should have made connections with Brian in the novel Hatchet as well has better understand the setting and plot of the novel.

Students should also have practices reading, research, and writing skills.
