Introduction
Peer pressure is happening at schools everywhere. A fellow student may tell you that something is "cool" or "fun" to do, when in reality it is not such a good idea. But what is peer-pressure and how do we know when to not follow a fellow student? What should we do when we are put into this situation? This webquest will enhance our knowledge of right and wrong and how to get out of any situation you find yourself in.
Task
You will make groups of four and two of you will read an article about drugs and the other two will read an article about peer pressure and each of you will write a summary. I will give you three different stories about students who are stuck in bad situations and together you will decide what each student in these stories should do using what you read. You will then share what you think each student should do with the class and share your new knowledge on what you have learned.
National Health Education Standards Met:
Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.
Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information, products, and services to enhance health.
Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.
Standard 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.
Standard 7: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.
Standard 8: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.
Process
You will get into groups of four and explore different topics using the internet.
Two people in the group will be in charge of researching about drugs and alcohol and what the consequences are. These two people will read this article below and write a summary to be handed in.

The other two people will research what peer pressure is and what to do when found in that situation. These two people will read this article below and also write a summary to be handed in.
http://kidshealth.org/en/kids/peer-pressure.html
Once the summaries have been handed in, you will get together in your groups of four and explain to one another what you have learned from reading the articles. Once you have completed this, you will read each story below and identify what peer pressure is happening and why the student shouldn't be tempted to listen to the peer pressure. You will use knowledge from both articles and work together.
Sally goes to her friend Amanda's house for a sleepover. When Sally gets there, Amanda tells her that the coolest guys in school asked her if they want to sneak out and drink beers with them. Amanda tells her that this is there one chance to hang out with these boys and that if they don't go then they will never speak to them again. What should Sally do and why?
Joe always walks to school and stops at his friend Pete's house which is right next to his so that they could walk together. On their way to school they run into their friend Todd. Todd lit a cigarette and started to smoke it. Todd asked them if they wanted to try some because it was the cool thing to do. Pete took the cigarette and took a puff of it. Pete went to hand it to Joe. What should Joe do and why?
Alicia and George sit next to each other when riding the bus home from school. George has a crush on Alicia and always wants to impress her. On the way home one day, Alicia took something out of her backpack and handed in to George telling him that it would make him feel good. He opened his hand and saw a pill of some sort. What should George do and why?
You will write the answers to these questions on a poster board and present them to the class as a group. Make sure to use your knowledge from both articles that you read.

The student will be able to understand what peer pressure is and learn what the right thing to do when in the situation of peer pressure. They will gain knowledge of tips on how to get out of different bad situations. They will also learn what drugs, alcohol, and tobacco are and why they should not take any of these substances. They will understand that saying no to these things is the right thing to do and to always make the right choice when peer pressured. Each week I will come up with one story to pass out to the class and have them answer in their own words what they would do in that situation and then have a group discussion about the story given out.
