Types of Sentences

Introduction

It is very important to understand the different types of sentences. Together, we will learn about four different types. By the end of the lesson, we will be able to tell the tone about a sentence based on it's language, and be able to place the coresponding punctuation mark!

Task

Before we can begin, we must learn about the four types of sentences!!

Declarative: Makes a statement

Interrogative: Asks a question

Imperative: Declares a command

Exclamatory: Shows emotion

Process

Now that you understand, it is time for some fun!!

1. Get into groups of five. Seeing as there are twenty-two students, two groups will have six students.

2. Get a plastic baggie from the front of the classroom. It contains ten slips of laminated paper with velcro on the back.

3. Choose a table that has the Declarative, Imperative, Interrogative, and Exclamatory labels and the velcro spaces below it.

4. Whenever I say "GO!", we will see which group can place the sentences in the correct place the fastest.

5. Switch sentences with all the groups until you have used them all!

Whichever team is the fastest overall will get five bonus points on the test!

Conclusion

When it comes to writing, it is important to understand how you need to use your voice. Do you need to be more laid back, or more confrontational? Do you want people to see your information as a simple declaration, or hear it as a plea to demand for change? As you get older, you need to understand the importance of the types of sentences and how you can use them to your advantage. This is why we are partaking in this particular activity.
