HSC Geography Comparative Online Study

Introduction

HELLO GEOGRAPHERS,

Welcome to the Geography Online Comparative study. The lessons are designed to compare case studies of world cities, global cities and mega cities. I hope you find the lessons interesting and challenging.

Process

LESSON 1

Recommended prior readings/preparation

Urban Dynamics - https://yr11geography.wikispaces.com/file/view/Dot+pts+on+urb+Dy.doc

The World's Most Influential Cities - http://www.forbes.com/sites/joelkotkin/2014/08/14/the-most-influential-…

You have the liberty to select a City in a developed world which is comparable to Sydney for lessons 1 and 2. Please select your preferred city now.

ACTIVITY 1: TIME ALLOWED - 15 minutes

(The purpose of this activity is for students to analyse the urban dynamics of change in a large city)

Sydney was ranked 15th in the 2015 Global Cities Index and much of the credit can be attributed to the development of suburbs like Pyrmont.

a) Discuss 3 spatial urban dynamics of change in Pyrmont and a suburb similar to it in an overseas city (your preferred city).

b) Explain how an urban dynamic has impacted on the culture of Pyrmont and the other suburb. Are there any similarities? You can draw a table to illustrate your answer.

ACTIVITY 2: TIME ALLOWED - 20 minutes

(The purpose of this activity is to highlight the importance of natural resources in the long term)

a) Define ecological sustainablity.

b) Analyse the impact of two urban dynamics on the ecological sustainability of Sydney and your preferred city.

ACTIVITY 3: TIME ALLOWED - 25 minutes

(The purpose of this activity is to test the student's ability to draw semi logarithnic graphs)

a) Select one urban dynamic of change for Sydney and your preferred city. Construct semi logarithmic graphs using the data collected.

LESSON 2

ACTIVITY 1 - TIME ALLOWED - 25 minutes

Contrast the two urban dynamics.

(The Stimulus photgraphs show two very different realities of life in urban spaces. The picture on the left is of Pyrmont)

Recommended prior readings/preparation:

ACTIVITY 2 - TIME ALLOWED - 35 minutes

(The purpose of this activity is to explore the urban dynamic processes in gated communities)

Select a gated community in Sydney and a gated community in your preferred city. Analyse the emergence of these gated communities and comment on some criticisms faced by them.

SUPERB effort guys. Let us know look at Mega cities in this lesson.

LESSON 3

ACTIVITY 1 - TIME ALLOWED - 30 minutes

(The purpose of this activity is to collect data and compare two mega cities)

a) Watch Youtube video- Mexico City: Megacity

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nwsj4Q08Go]

b) Select another mega city (Research city), preferably on another continent. Using key statistical indicators like rapid urban growth and urbanisation, construct bar graphs for Mexico city and mega city (Research city) to illustrate your findings.

C) Evaluate the effectiveness of the responses to the challenges of living in a mega city like Mexico and mega city(Research city)? You may use a graphic organiser. List your findings in a table.

Mexico City               Mega City (Research city)

ACTIVITY 2 - TIME ALLOWED - 30 minutes

(The purpose of this activity is to outline the differences between the two mega cities)

Differentiate the changing nature and spatial distribution of Mexico city and mega city (Research city).

WOOHOO!!! Well done Geographers.

LESSON 4

ACTIVITY 1 - TIME ALLOWED- 20 minutes

(The purpose of this activity is to differentiate between a world city and a mega city)

Let us watch a Prezi first:

[video:https://prezi.com/s3o3nem8x6zl/world-cities-vs-mega-cities/]

Outline the major differences between a world city Sydney) and a mega city (Mexico).

ACTIVITY 2 - TIME ALLOWED -40 minutes

(The purpose of this activity is to gauge the depth of students understanding of the concept)

Prepare a Prezi to demonstrate the changing role of regional centres and the demise of the small town.

Evaluation

Assessment task:

After completion of the online comparative study, students will get in pairs and evaluate: ‘Is Sydney a truly Global city?’  Gather data (graphs, pictures, tables, articles) to support your view. Discuss at least 3 relevant ideas in a 10 minute presentation.

Conclusion

HOORAY!!!

Thank you Geographers for participating in this online comparative study. It is hope that you gained more knowledge and skills which you can utilise in your examination
