Monarch Butterfly Metamorphosis

Introduction

So, What is the big word metamorphosis? Basically, it means to change into something else. For a butterfly it is their life cycle. How does a butterfly change, though? What is it changing to or from? Was it always a butterfly? Let's find out!

Task

You and two group mates will use some picture books I have provided and the internet to discover what a butterfly is, what its life cycle is, and all of the stages.

Process

Task 1:

With the help of your group, go to these websites and discover the monarch butterfly life cycle. Then answer these questions in your journal.

1. What does a butterfly start out as and where is it? You can draw a picture if it will help you.

2.What is the second stage of its life cycle? You can draw a picture if it will help you.

3.What do they eat at the second stage?

4.What is the third stage of its life cycle, and where does it go for this staage? You can draw a picture if it will help you.

5.What is its pupa made of, and how long does it stay in it?

6.What is the final stage of its life cycle? You can draw a picture if it will help you.

7.Are the butterfly wings big or small when they come out?How long does it take for their wings to grow to full size?

8.What do they eat as adult butterflies?

9.Which life cycle are they in the longest? You can draw a picture if it will help you.

10.Where do Monarch butterflys live?

Task 2:

After You and your partners have finished answering the questions, get materials from the craft table to create an egg on a leaf, a caterpiller, the cacoon, and a butterfly

For the egg you will need:

-green leaf-shape paper

-3 or 4 marshmellos

-glue

Glue the marshmellos onto the paper. You can draw on it as much as you desire.

For the caterpiller you will need:

-5 or 6 colored circles

-googli eyes

-pieces of pipe cleaner

-glue

Glue the edges of the circles together. After it dries, glue the gooli eyes onto on end and glue the pipe cleaner peices behind the eyes like antenea. You can draw on it as much as you desire.

For the pupa you will need:

-A toilet paper roll

-Tape

Push the ends of the toilet paper roll down and tape it. You can draw on it as much as you desire.

For the butterfly you will need:

-a popcicle stick

-Wing-shaped paper

-googli eyes

-pipe cleaner pieces

-glue

Color the wings and the popcile stick how you want, but make it look nice! Glue the popcicle stick down the center of the wings. After that dries, glue the googli eyes onto the top of the popcicle stick, and glue the pipe cleaner pieces above the eyes like antanea. You can color it and draw on it as much as you desire.

Task 3:

You and your group will show the class all of the butterfly objects you made together. When you show the class, tell them what each object is, and which stage of metamorphosis it is.

Rubric:

-Each question worth 2pts

(0pts-nothing; 1pt-atempted, but wrong; 2pts-answered correctly)

-Eggs on a leaf 5pts

(0pts-nothing; 1pt-a leaf or eggs; 3pts-some eggs are glued to the leaf, but not enough; 5pts-leaf with all of the eggs properly glued on)

-Caterpiller 5pts

(0pts-nothing; 1pt-has some or all of the materials; 3pts-circles are glued together or eyes and antenea are glued on; 5pts-all of the circles are glued together and the eyes and antenea are properly glued on)

-Pupa 5pts

(0pts-nothing; 1pt-has a toilet paper roll; 3pts-the roll is just pushed together and taped; 5pts-the toilet paper roll is pushed in and taped down properly)

-Butterfly 5pts

(0pts-nothing; 1pt-has some or all of the materials; 3pts-parts of it are glued, but not all or parts are glued wrong; 5pts-the popcicle stick is properly glued to the wings, and the eyes and antenea are properly glued to the popcicle stick)

-Being able to go in front of the class and name each object  and tell the life cycle stage of each object correctly 10pts

(2pts for speaking in front of class, 1pt for each object named correctly, and 1pt for each stage named correctly)
