Battle of Rich Mountain

Introduction

The Battle of Rich Mountain was one of the earliest engagements of The Civil War. The Union, under the command of General McClellan attacked and defeated confederate troops defending the strategic position, and set the boundary of western Virginia, later what would become West Virginia. 

Task

Students will visit multiple websites about the Battle of Rich Mountain and write an explanation on the importance of the battle.  

SS.8.H.CL3.3 compare and contrast the military strategies of the North and South with regard to specific events and geographic locations in West Virginia (e.g., the Battle of Philippi, Rich Mountain, Droop Mountain, Battle of Scary Creek and Battle of Carnifex Ferry).

Through this webquest students learned when the Battle of Rich Mountain was fought, where the Battle of Rich Mountain was fought, commanding leaders for the Union and the Confederacy, who won the Battle of Rich Mountain, and the importance for winning the Battle of Rich Mountain.
