Growing Seeds and Plants!

Introduction

Would you be able to get a seed to grow into a plant? Would you be able to keep the plant alive?

Scientists came to vistit our class, and they brought with them a special seed! It is our job to get the seed to grow so that we can tell the scientists what kind of plant it is. In order to do so we will have to learn more about the plant growth cycle and the different parts of it.

The scientist also want us to keep the plant safe for them, so we will have to learn what a plant needs to survive!

Now it's time to get learning about plants and help the scientists!

Task

After you have learned about the plant cycle and what a plant needs to live, you will create a book for the scientists telling them about all you learned about taking care of the seed and at the end what kind of plant it became! To make your book interesting you will have to not only write about what happened in each stage, but you will also draw a picture of it!

Your book should aswer the following questions:

What does a seed need to start growing?

What stages does a seed go through before it becomes a plant?

What happens at each stage?

Your seed has grown into a plant- what does it need to grow now?

You will be given these handouts so that you can keep the information you collect organized:

Process

To be able to create your book you must first:

1. Research the seed cycle. You need to learn what a seed needs to grow and how it does before you can try to get one to! Find information either online or in classroom/ library books about this topic. You can also find pictures or videos of what is going on, so you can see the process!

2. Write down what you learn about the seed cycle. Try to write in complete sentences so that writing your book will be easier later on. At this point you can also collect pictures of the cycle that you want to draw in your book.

3. Next you'll have to learn about the needs of the plant you grew! You can do the same thing here that you did to learn about the seed. The library usually has lots of books you can checkout on this topic, so you can use this project for your weekly reading too! There are also lots of pictures online to show you what a plant needs and how the plant gets it.

4. Again, this step is the same as that for the seed. You will write down your information on plant's needs and collect your pictures/ drawings for your book.

5. Get together all the information you have collected so far, and bring it to the teacher to look it over and help you with any missing information. If everything looks good then you'll get your blank book!

6. Now it's time to use what you learned to write the scientist a book about how to grow their seed, the stages it'll go through, and what the plant it will grow into will need!

7. (Optional) Grow your own real seeds in the classroom and write at the end of your book what kind of plant you grew!

Evaluation

You will be graded on:

1. Showing an understanding of the growth of seeds into plants and what both need to grow. Did you show that you knew all about the topics?

2. Display the writing skills you have learned so far this year. You will also be graded on the correct spelling of words, especially those we have learned in class.

3. Your ability to use all the resources available to you. It's important to be able to find information in both books and online.

4. The quality of your book. Are your pictures sloppy or colorless? Did you elaborate the information in your sentences? Your writing skills will be looked at again here.

Conclusion

Thanks to what we learned we now know how to grow the seed for the scientist and keep their plant alive! Your books will be very helpful for anyone who wants to learn how to grow a seed into a plant and keep that plant happy! We did such a god

job helping the scientists that they gave us enough seeds for everyone to grow at home; you can share all you know about plants with your family as it grows!
