Get Ready to Read The Outsiders!

Introduction

During the first half of the 4th 9 weeks, we will be reading The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton. Today, you will complete a webquest to learn about the following: life in the 1960's, which is the time period of the novel; the Greasers vs. the Socs, which are the two rival "gangs" in the novel; the characters in the novel; and information about S.E. Hinton, the author.

Have fun, and immerse yourself into the world of The Outsiders.

To begin, click "Task" for an overview of the assignments you'll need to complete.

Task

There are 4 categories of assignments you must complete in order to be eligible for a 100% on this webquest. Each category is worth 25% of the overall grade.

Category 1: The 1960's

Category 2: Greasers vs. Socs

Category 3: Outsiders Characters

Category 4: S.E. Hinton

To get started, click "Process" and go through each of the steps for each of the categories.

Process

Before you do anything else, do the following:

1) open up a new tab

2) log into your Google Drive

3) create a new folder titled Outsiders Webquest (include your first and last name in the title as well)

All 4 documents should be saved in this folder and shared with me (Amy Johnson) by the end of the class period.

Category 1: The 1960's

a. Open a new Google Doc and title it The 1960's.

b. Create the chart below (2 columns; 13 rows)

c. Explore the Internet to find images that capture each of the items. *Keep in mind that we should have pictures of these items from the 1960's. 

d. Paste these images in the appropriate place in the chart.

Category 2: Greasers vs. Socs

a. Open a new Google Doc and title it Greasers vs. Socs.

b. Create the chart below (3 columns; 7 rows). 

c. Explore the Internet to find images that capture each gang's preference in each of the categories.

d. Paste these images in the appropriate place in the chart.

*The Overall category should include a head to toe image of what a quintessential member of each gang looks like.

a. Open a new Google Doc and title it Outsiders Characters.

b. Create the chart below (5 columns; 11 rows). 

c. Explore the Internet to find information, such as the gang each character is affiliated with as well as a brief description, such as age, physical qualities, and personality traits.

d. Paste this info, as well as images, in the appropriate place in the chart.

*e. Choosing from these 10 characters, pick 3 whose parts you'd like to read out loud in class. Rank them. For example, write a 1 in the last column for Dallas Winston if he is the part you're most interested in reading, 2 if Johnny Cade is your second choice, and so on.
