Introduction
Hello 5th and 6th graders. Are you ready to take a trip to "Eguations'"? You may think where is this place, I didn't hear about!!! So check this out;
Equation is a topic in Algebra which is an abstract branch of math. In algebra, there are topics like equations for which can be described as an equality with one or more variables. Variables are letters/symbols/shapes to represent unknown numbers. To make unknown numbers as known; equations must be solved. To solve an equation, values of the variables must be determined for making the equality true.
There are many types of equations and they are found in many areas of mathematics. However you will pay attention only the ones that are necessary for you.

Task
Learning Objective
Today you will be working on "Equations" in Algebra. The purpose of this lesson to understand and apply Equations in Algebra which is briefly explained in introduction section.
Your task to be able to complete your journey in equations world by following simple steps.
- Watch two provided videos to understand the basics of this topic.
- Take notes during the videos to be able to use it at next sections.
- Create an account on " https://www.mindmeister.com " to create a mind mapping for this lesson as your final work.
Process
At this sections, you are asked to do plenty of work here in a chronologic order which will be more organized way to put your work together.
I am assuming that in task section, you have already finished watching provided two basic videos and taken some meaningful notes to use here.
Day 1:
Here is one more video besides the videos in task section to give more sense about the multi - step equations.
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_y_Q3_B2Vh8]
It is time to show your work now by completing the given questions. However you are not limited to do only the given questions in this section. You can find pretty much good information along with a lot of examples offline resources such as Glenco math book "course 1" and "course 2" as well as some online worksheets.

http://www.mastermath.info/images/stories/pdf/6/637.pdf
There is only one correct answer for each question. However there are variety ways of showing work. Showing work will lead you to correct answer.
Also below table; you can find information about the types of operations and their inverse (opposite ) operations.
| Operation | Inverse Operation |
| Additon | Subtraction |
| Subtraction | Additon |
| Multiplication | Division |
| Division |
Multiplication |
Here are the steps of solving an equation in general way
Step 1: Figure out what is inverse operation of the given operation in equation.
Step 2: Isolate the variable by applying the inverse operation to both side of the “=” sign.
Step 3: Reapply the step 1 & 2 if it is a multi-step equation.
Step 4: After finding the value of the variable, check your solution by plug in the value in equation.
Solve each equation. Check your solution.
| Equations/Examples | Addition Equation | Subtraction Equation | Multiplication Equation | Division Equation | Multi – Step Equations |
| Sample Question |
Y + 4 = 11 “Subtract 4 from both sides of = sign to isolate the variable Y” Y + 4 = 11 - 4 = - 4 ------------------- Y= 7 |
d - 12 = 23 “Add 12 to both sides of = sign to isolate the variable d” d - 12 = 23 +12 = + 12 ------------------- d= 35 |
5f = 100 “Divide both sides of = sign by 5 to isolate the variable f” 5f = 100 ÷5 = ÷5 ------------------- f= 20 |
e÷11 = 6 “Multiply both sides of = sign by 11 to isolate the variable e” e÷11 = 6 *11 = *11 ------------------- e= 66 |
9w + 7 = 25 “Step 1: Subtract 7 from both sides of = sign to isolate the 9w Step 2: Divide both sides of the = sign to isolate the variable w ” 9w + 7 = 22 - 7 = - 7 ------------------- 9w = 18 ÷ 9 = ÷ 9 ------------------- w = 2 |
| 1. Question |
p + 2 = 8 |
n – 3 = 6 | 3k = 15 | 4 = r÷2 | 2m + 6 = 14 |
| 2. Question |
8 = 5 + q |
3 = c – 1 | 27 = 9h | s÷4 = 9 | r÷3 - 1 = 7 |
| 3. Question |
2 + h = 10 |
a – 1 = 7 | 3a = 9 | h÷4 = 8 | 2+x - 10 = 3 |
Day 2:
It is now time to spend some time on creating a mind map to share with me to get graded. There are planty of online mind mapping web sites but I beleive I can offer one free and user friendly web site about mind mapping to make your job easier.
It is very easy to sign up and get to work. You can pick your own option and be creative on your own way about your mind mapping. I have provided a sample mind mapping as a guidance for you. You use the same style but make sure your examples are not the same a long with answers.

Have fun while you are creating your mind mapping. At the end of completing your mind map, there one last step left. Share your mind map with me at " gumusay_su@gmail.com" DO not forget to select share option to be able to send an invitation to me to see your creative work.
Day 3:
This part is optional so if you like to be challenged and found the previous information as piece of cake, you can practise some 7th grade level work. Here is what to do: Watch the videos about Linear Equations and how to graph them;
" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvn5x_ISago"
" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miG-JhttnZo"
Then You can also work on these worksheets without using the answer key afterwards you can check your answers.

Evaluation
You have been working hard by watching videos, taking notes from videos, and working on giving questions. Now it is time to harvest what you have done for this lesson. When you submit your work to ms Kaya, it will be graded by the rubric which is provided below
|
Conclusion
At the end of this webquest, you should be able to give a defition to an equation , find the types of equations, and solve an equation problem by finding the value of variable.
