Introduction

The Orion students just returned from spring break.  However, when the last student entered the building, a thick cloud of smoke blew out of the radiators putting the students into a deep sleep.  Teachers everywhere began calling student's names, tapping students on the shoulders, and even lit a trash can on fire to activate the fire alarm.  When the fire alarm triggered, none of the students woke which elicited Mr. Lombardi to quickly distinguish the fire.  Mr. Scott decided to leave his post and find William. He thought that if he woke William, William would be the key to waking up all the other students.  After multiple attempts of waking William, there was no response.  Mr. Dorsey alerted Ms. Pam to begin making multiply k cup coffees to put underneath the student's noses so students could take in the smell of the caffeine, thinking this could trigger a response.  Ms. Stanford, Ms. Marks, the Dean team hustled to Ms. Pam's walkie call and began an assembly line of coffee making.  Mrs. Buelterman quickly organized the staff into groups to begin delivering the coffee to each student.  When the last coffee cup was delivered, the Orion staff held their breaths and waited for the students to stir.  Unfortunately, no student woke.  Mr. Parker yelled, "We need to wake these students so I can get home and watch the Final Four!"  Mr. Dorsey then said, "Oh no, if our students don't wake up, I'm afraid it's not our time to shine because no student learning will take place."    

Your objective is to research cognitive engagement so the Orion students will wake from their deep sleep and student learning will be saved.  You have 45 minutes, good luck!

4.) Explain the 10 rules of student engagement

6.) Provide a reflection or response to your learning

  • List and describe the 5 levels of student engagement using a 2 column chart
  • Translate the attributes of the 3 types of classrooms with a cloze procedure
  • Compare and contrast the "look-for" during teacher and student directed learning by filling in a Venn diagram
  • Explain the 10 rules of student engagement by writing a response.

3.) As you conduct research from the listed websites, complete the graphic organizer.  (Note:  Each person is responsible for filling out their own.)

5.) Reflect on today's learning.  Within your group, take turns sharing out how you can influence student engagement within your classroom. After all group members have shared, choose one member to record their idea using the chart paper and a pen/marker.
