Introduction

The US-Dakota War of 1862 is a significant event in the history and development of the state of Minnesota and in the history of the Dakota people and the United States. Yet, not many Minnesotans know much about this dark period in our state and not many are willing to discuss it.
You are a newspaper for the St. Paul Pioneer Dispatch and you're job is to write an in-depth investigative report about this conflict. Within your article, you want to answer the following question: "How should we, as Minnesotans, honor and commemorate the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862? Why is it important to remember this event?"
Task
The Task
It is December 26, 2012 and you have an assignment to write an in-depth article about the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Your task is to commemorate this significant, yet dark event in our state's history. Your editor has called a meeting with the newspaper staff. She said “We do not want people to forget what has happened. We must record the truth as we know it about the Dakota Wars and what led up to it so that others will remember."
The end result will be:
