Introduction
Welcome everyone!
You are currently on the Alcatraz webquest!
We have spent a few classes working on Alcatraz and through this webquest, you are going to gain more knowledge about this Top 1 touristic attraction in San Francisco.
You will learn more about the Alcatraz history, famous prisoners, attempts to escape, prison's rules and children living on the island.
The information gathered in the webquest will allow you to complete the final task. Start your research by clicking on the Process tab. Follow the instructions and write your answers on the Alcatraz Webquest sheet.
Then, look at the tab task to have an idea of the final task.
Task
FINAL TASK:
You have to choose between these two options:
1. Write a letter telling what a day on Alcatraz looks like for a child growing up on the island.
2. Write a report about what a day looks like for a warden working at the Alcatraz penitentiary.
If you choose option 1, you need these elements:
- Letter format (Greeting, date, farewell, signature at the end)
- Information about where you live
- Information about one famous inmate who just arrived on the island
- Information about one escape attempt
- Describe one typical day on the Alcatraz island
- School
- Games on the island
- Contacts with prisoners
If you choose option 2, you need these elements:
- Report format (Date, hour, signature at the end)
- Information about the penitentiary
- Information about one famous inmate who just arrived at the penitentiary
- Information about one escape attempt
- Describe what a day looks like when you work at Alcatraz
- Rules that prisoners have to follow
- How many times you count them
- Contacts with prisoners
Process
Task 1 :
First, you to go to http://www.alcatrazhistory.com/ and find information about the penitentiary on the Home page.
Then, answer questions 1 to 3 which you can find on the Home page.
Task 2:
1. Click on the Famous Inmate tab and read about the inmates in general.
Answer questions 4 to 7.
Then, choose one inmate and tell me:
- His name
- The reason(s) he was at Alcatraz
- How long was his sentence
Task 3:
Continue you research and click on Escapes - Escape attempts.
Answer question 8.
After, choose one escape attempt and tell me:
- how did the prisoners manage to escape?
- What happened during the escape?
- Why did you choose this attempt?
Task 4:
Take a look at the inmates' rules and regulations in the Prison Life tab.
Choose three rules and tell me why these rules would have been difficult to follow for you.
Complete your information by looking at the Daily Routine.
