"OOO OOO Junkanoo" "Who are we?" "Valley Boys" "Saxons" "Roots, who in the MORNING?" "Warriors!!"! Imagine yourself rushing down Bay Street, feeling the Junkanoo beats of the goatskin drums and the cowbells. Picture yourself wearing a vibrant color costume and performing to the crowd. Could you imagine feeling "The Junkanoo Rush" while your group parade the Rawson Square area! Have you ever dream of performing or joining a Junkanoo group? Here's your chance and please do take advantage of this once in a life time opportunity. However, YOU, YES YOU have been selected to create a Junkanoo Group which will perform at the School's Annual Christmas Function!

Task

Performing at the School's Annual Christmas Function is a daunting task seeing that the performances get better year after year! However, you guys will add to the good standard of this function by giving your best performance. You guys will do the following:

  • Create a name for your Junkanoo Group
  • Create a theme.
  • Create ten (10) Junkanoo Pieces/Costume (INCLUDING A BANNER which MUST be on wheels)
  • Junkanoo Groups must have ten (5) musicians
  • Musicians must consist of (One (1) beller, One brass instrument & One cowbeller)
  • Must have at least two (2) dance routines

Each Member of the group is responsible for the following:

  • Creating one costume
  • Participating (Either a musician or a dancer)
  • Entertaining the crowd

KEEP IN MIND THE CROWD MUST BE ENTERTAINED THROUGHOUT YOUR PERFORMANCE!

Lets get started!

  1.  You will meet in groups of five(5) and discuss the following (Junkanoo Group names and Theme)
  2. You will also decide on a set meeting day and time (you will meet WEEKLY)
  3. The group will decide where they'll construct costumes.
  4. Each group member will choose a role of either dancer or musician.
  5. Each member is responsible for participating and must entertain the crowd.
  6. Each member is require to write a two (2) page report of their roles and participate in their groups.
  7. Each member must follow their themes selected as a group and properly execute it. This requires extensive research; therefore please revise this link http://www.bahamasgateway.com/junkanoo.htm to  understand what Junkanoo is all about.
  8. As a group you must brainstorm ideas to ensure you come up with the best theme possible.
  9. Ensure to practice routines and music selection everyday
  10. ENSURE YOU GUYS AGREE ON ALL DESIGNS & ROUTINES (P.S: You now become one)
  11. Ensure costumes are neatly pasted
  12. Ensure five (5) costume pieces are present while performing
  13. Ensure ALL group members are present!
  14. Separate from the individual report, as a group you guys will type a three (3) page reflection on how it felt to be apart of a Junkanoo group.
  15. Be prepared to perform !

 

Evaluation

This assignment is to be done in GROUPS, Groups of 5.

Individual work is a NO NO

You guys have made it to the end!

The Christmas Annual Function has once again remain the Function of the year with the help of you guys. I was advised by the principal that we must keep the culture alive and start our School's first ever Junkanoo group; they want us to participate for Junior Junkanoo guys! I hope you guys enjoyed the multiple trips to Junkanoo shacks and meeting with Junkanooers. However, I hope you continue to be an asset to your culture like you did at the function.

ART STUDIES

Teacher: Carla Stuart                        

Professor Carla Stuart has been teaching Kobe Academy for five (5) years . Her studies which is that of Art has been redefined since her five (5) year tenure. Student have been more interactive and in "tune" with their culture based on the assignmments assinged to the respective students. Students of the past and present of grade ten (10) have been asked to dance, perform, play and construct many cultural audits which have impacted both the school and public at large.

With Arts under her belt Ms. Stuart stated that as years to come she wants to expand her student base and teach the entire Academy from grades 7-12 Art. She stated that "Art is her passion and she want the youths to appreciate and love their culture, seeing that their culture is so "unique". Ms. Stuart stated that this is only the beginning of her Art endeavors and she plans to impact all students that pass her class with a "one and a life time art experience!"
