Teaching about Race and Ethnicity

Introduction

As we learn more about the immigrant experience, we see the evolution of racial identity and the political implications of defining race. We have seen and will continue to see immigrant groups denied their Constitutional rights and the law be manipulated to promote some groups while holding others back. While we know that science cannot defend or define "race", people have used race to separate each other and therefore members different races have different life-experiences in this country.

Task

Your task is to create a plan for teaching about race and ethnicity in the 21st century. You will determine your audience and process--who needs to learn and how this will be executed? Is your target audience adults, teens, children? Do politicians, teachers, business people need to be educated? Are you targeting a specific race or ethnicity or maybe people who live in a certain area of the country? Will this be accomplished through a professional retreate, a summer camp, curricula in schools, community meetings, experimental living situations...the only thing limiting you is your own imagination!

Process

First, you will need to do some research in order to create the most effective plan. Go to your VC account, find a google doc shared with you by Ms. Pearlman, make a copy of the document, save it with your last name and those of your 2 partners and the words Race & Ethnicity. For example, if Ms. Pearlman were partners wtih Ms. Dordal and Mr. Jones, our document would be named "PEARLMAN, DORDAL, JONES, RACE & ETHNICITY". Please remember to share your document with Ms. Pearlman and every member of your group!

You may delegate the research as you see fit. For example, one person may wish to research one ethnic group or definitions. After completing your research, decide who your target audience will be.

Write a rationale of why this particular group needs to be targeted. Your rationale should be a paragraph in length and supply sufficient evidence for why this group must be targeted. You are highly encouraged to use historical evidence and current events to prove why this should be your target audience. Every member of your group must agree.

What will be accomplished

1) research

2) rationale

3) plan
