4 Seasons

Introduction

The phone just rang for you! The folks down at our local State Park need help determining what season it is. Are you ready to help them figure it out? You will need to identify different characertics of each season; reconize the animals that are active and what plants look like during specfic times of year. Be prepared to learn a few things along the way.

Task

Thank you for answering this call.  The park ranger is not sure what season it is. In order to help him out we will also need to learn our seasons.  There are two games and one video you will need to watch to learn about the seasons. After you do these things you will able to identify a season by the clues the ranger tells you on the phone. 

Process

The first step in determining the seasons is to know the names of all four; Spring, Summer, Winter, and Fall(Autumn). Since you are all so smart, I'm sure you knew that already. 

Now we are going to figure out what each season looks like in a picture and memorize the order of the seasons;

Now we are going to discover what is appropriate to wear in the summer vs. the winter. Try to think about what you wear during that time of year.

The last thing we are going to look at is the type of animals that are active during the seasons. Many animals leave their homes in the winter, the animals listed in this video do just that.

Evaluation

While on the phone on with the ranger, he tells you that there is snow falling from the sky and landing on the ground.  He says that he cannot find any butterflies around.  He wonders where they disappered to.  Everyone he passes is bundled up with scarves, mittens, and coats. He also says that the trees have no leaves on them. What season is it? 

Conclusion

If you told our park ranger that it was winter then your right!

Bonus points if you told him that the butterflies had migrated for winter!

Have the students raise their hand or write on a peice of paper their answer, or you could dicuss this as a class. Feel free to help your students understand everything, and help them read the directions. However, please refrain from giving them answers to any of the games or the BIG question.
