Introduction
After the Tupac & D Foster Book, you will work in literature circles to discuss and create a unit for a book of your choice from the syllabus. The purpose of this mini webquest is to let you see how you might use one to introduce some information in the unit about that book. Using a webquest may be very helpful, especially for researching history, studying about an author, or exploring cultural differences in the book. A webquest gives students a chance to be in charge of their own investigation (They can tell you, rather than your telling them). At the same time, the structure can provide a starting point for the students and direct them to appropriate grade level materials.
What you will see here is a little about how to create a webquest. As you go into this quest, you will learn about Jacqueline Woodson and Tupac before reading the book.
Task
The next few pages will help you discover facts about author--Jacquline Woodson and celebrity--TuPac Shakur before beginning to read After TuPac and DFoster . I will also make suggestions about how you might utilize a quest in your unit later.
Process
I have bold-printed information for what we are doing today. Non-bold print is for you to refer to later.
1. Later you may design a web quest to accompany your novel unit. If you click on the "view web quests" at the top of this page, you can see some quests completed by others. (I love the one on Mythology) Keep things simple for younger grades.
2. Click on https://www.createwebquest.com/what-is-a-webquest Click each of the headings on the left side to see where items will go and click this link for terms you will need to know.
3. To get an idea about how to incorporate a webquest into a unit. Here is a sample as we prepare to read our next book. You will use the web to retrieve information about Woodson and TuPac.
a) First, click on this website to learn about J. Woodson, author of After Tupac and D Foster. http://www.jacquelinewoodson.com/ [If we were completing a project for this book (which we are not), I would ask you to include the following in a presentation:
- a picture of the author
- five facts about her including a brief description about who Woodson is and where she is from
- her reason for writing this book.
For today's purpose, jot down some facts about her to share with the class.]
b) Then, to learn about Tu Pac, click on this website and be ready to share some information about him with the class. http://www.biography.com/people/tupac-shakur-206528
4. Webquests should include: Introduction, Task, Process, Evaluation, Conclusion, Credits and Teacher's Page, but you can design your own, adapting to the format. (This web quest would be for 5th graders. When you create yours, state the grade for which you are designing your unit and quest.)
5. When you design your unit later, if you use a quest, make it colorful, informative and fun. If topic is questionable, guide your students to the best sites.
6. If you use this format, every time you edit, you must remember to save or you will lose your work.
7. If you want to know more about how to design a webquest, refer to these two sites http://www.thirteen.org/edonline/concept2class/webquests/index.html http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1598/RT.60.7.5/epdf

Hopefully, you and your group will create a spectacular unit. There is a sample rubric under evaluation, designed as you might, to use with your students.

Teacher Page
This is my very first webquest creation. I am presently teaching myself how to do it. I have observed middle school students creating webquests for social studies, so I am hopeful of success. This is a tool that will be improved, replaced and expanded beyond belief by the time you are teaching, but the possibilities of how you might create exciting adventures for your own students are endless. This is a great place to start![img_assist|nid=35400|title=Teacher|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=258|height=249]
