Answer the following questions IN FULLSENTENCES for EACH of the 3 fads you selected:
How is each fad promoted/marketed
The water and vinegar diet was promoted by newspapers and town cryers.
The gluten free diet was promoted by social media, the news, newspapers, on boards out side of shops and in magazines.
The grapefruit diet was promoted by the telegraph pole by people contacting other people and telling them about it and newspapers.
Find an example advertisement for one of the fads and insert into this worksheet

Explain why you think the promotion/marketing of these fads would be successful
Because in 1820 diets were only new so when the water and vinegar diet came out most people would of wanted to try it.
Because in 2014 every thing was out like social media and the news so most people who had a t.v or a phone they would be able to see the new diet.
Because in 1930 the grapefruit diet was a new thing and new things come out most people like to try it to see if it really works.
Explain why you think the promotion/marketing of these fads would be unsuccessful
Because in 1820 things like social media wasn't invented and some people may have not heard of it before and because the title may have put them of it.
Because in 2014 some people may not of had a phone or t.v to see or they might like to eat bread and stuff with gluten in it.

Which of the 3 fads you selected would you be most likely to try and WHY?
I would like to try the grapefruit diet because it looks nice and it sounds nice, also if it tasted nice I would eat to see if it actually worked.
Which of the 3 fads would you be least likely to try and WHY?
I would least likely to try the water and vinegar diet because water and vinegar does not sound nice and it the name kind of puts me off.
What are the negative side effects for each?
The negative side effects for the water and vinegar diet is it was introduced while long time ago and it may have died out and replaced with a new diet or fad.

Complete a mini report that presents information you have gathered from watching Dangerous Fads (Dr Phil).
The report must include the following information and be presented in an easy-to-read and interesting way:
Types of Fads in the tv show – including details of each
Types of people who normally are involved in these fads and reasons why they want to do these fads
Side effects
Research information on the fads from the show to find more interesting facts to include in your mini report
While I was watching dangerous fads by dr Phil this is what I found out. Some of the fads that were on the show were huffing which is a fad that teenagers do by spraying a aerosol can substance on a cloth of hood then they put it over their mouth and start breathing it in. Another one was tanerexic were adults or teens are addicted to tanning, some would tan five - six days a week and the amount time they spent in the sun or tanning bed was about twenty-four hours in the sun. The last one was dieting pills, they are addictive because they help lose 10-15 pounds in a week but the side effects aren't good.
The types of people who are most likely to do these fads are people who don't care if they die from it either because they say it's their life and they can live it the way they want live it and if they die younge they said at least I lived a fun life or at least I'll be nice and tanned when I die. The reason why teenagers like to do huffing is because they think it's fun and because everyone else is doing it they think they should do it. The reason why teenagers and adults have tanning beds or spend a lot of time in the sun tanning is because they want to look beautiful. The people who would have the dieting pills are adults because they want to lose weight fast but some are sensable and stop once they've here'd what it does to you.
The side effects to huffing are numbness all over the body because the brain shuts downs for a while, another side effect was passing out a few times because they've done to much huffing. The side effects to tanning are freckles and skin spots, some of the skin spots can cause skin cancer which can kill you. The last side effects are the dieting pill side effects and they are dizziness, mood swings, numbness, stressfulness and tiredness.
An interesting fact about huffing is people die from suffocating, burns and choking on their own vomit, an interesting fact about tanning is if you tan in a tanning bed and under the age of 35 you can melanoma really easy and you can get a new mole each time you tan, the last interesting fact about dieting pills is that dieting pills trick your brain into thinking that you've just eaten a large meal.

Worksheet 5
(Conclusion tab)FAMOUS FADS…
Find pictures of 3 famous people who are have tried a health fad. Create a chain diagram that links the famous person to the fad and also to the negative side effects of the fad
The easiest way to create the chain diagram is using the program PAINT and then insert the saved image into your WebQuest
Gwyneth Paltrow The 37-year-old actress followed a macrobiotic diet for 11 years but was recently diagnosed with osteopenia, an illness that can lead to the serious bone disease osteoporosis. "I suffered a pretty severe tibial plateau fracture a few years ago (requiring surgery) which led the orthopaedic surgeon to give me a bone scan, at which point it was discovered I had the beginning stages of osteopenia said Gwynethy Paltro. The negative side affects to the micribiotic diet is nutrient deficiencies are common among people who are not taking the care to get all of the variety necessary in a healthy diet. Suddenly changing your diet completely makes it easy to miss things without realizing it right away which can make you really sick.
Madonna is a fan of the raw food diet. While not everything she eats is raw, she prefers to eat as much as possible that way. It is a very strict eating plan that cuts out many types of food and drink. It is not just a diet plan; it is a way of life. It involves eating 75 per cent uncooked food, because it's believed cooking destroys the enzymes that help with digestion. Foods include fruit, vegetables, seeds, legumes, dried fruits, nuts, seaweed and mineral water.
The dangers: "There is no need to eat raw food. If you like it, then great, but you don't need to. If you were eating enough nuts and legumes your iron intake would be reasonable, but you wouldn't get enough calcium. It's very difficult to eat a balanced diet on this one," Ferraretto says.
Possible side effects: Nutrient deficiency, general fatigue over time, osteoporosis.
It saved Reese Witherspoon a lot of money and took zero time to prepare outside of opening a jar. Created by US celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson, the diet involves eating 14 servings of baby food a day followed by a healthy adult dinner.
The dangers: "There is nothing logical about this diet. Babies have a strict introduction schedule for food so their digestive systems get used to food at different ages. Baby food is for babies because they don't need to eat as much as adults, so deficiencies could arise, especially in iron, zinc and calcium. Babies also drink milk, which is not included in this diet," Ferraretto says.
Possible side effects: Fatigue,iron deficiency.

Worksheet 6
(Credits tab)Write a page that includes information on the following:
what you have learned from completing the various tasks
how do companies get people to try various health fads
design a better strategy for good health outcomes that would work over a long term
I have learned that some health fads are good for you and that some aren't good for to you. That health fads stay for a while then they go and then they come back. Health fads can be dangerous for young people and that if someone's doing a health fad that you know it's not good for you, you don't do it. Companies try to advertise as much as they can to try and suck people in so they will by their product, they will also come up with things like by one get one free and if you by one of our products the money will go to a charity of your choice. They will also put coupons in newspapers and magazines to advertise.
