Measurement with Mrs. Willis

Introduction

Welcome to our measurement Webquest! Over the next couple of weeks you will be learning about measuring the length of objects. You will be working with your groups to complete the tasks below. Your groups job is to learn how to measure all kinds of different things in the classroom.

We will begin by creating a measuring tool to put inside your toolbox. You will use this tool when you measure things around the classroom. Get ready to become measuring experts and share your findings with the rest of the class!

Task

 Task #1 Measurement Tools

A carpenter (a person who makes wooden objects and structures) uses certain tools to measure structures and objects before they build them. Using the links at the bottom, research the tools carpenters use and record your answers on the MEASUREMENT TOOLS worksheet located at the back of the room.

1. ruler

2. yard stick

3. measuring tape

Task #2 Inches

There are many things that we can use to measure an inch. Your nuckle, a paper clip, a color tile, or a marker cap are all ABOUT 1 inch.

Go to the toolbox and choose some tools to measure with. You will have the choice of paper clips, color tiles, color cubes, or you may use your nuckle.

Pick up a MEASURING WITH TOOLS worksheet at the back of the room.

Measure the objects that are listed on the worksheet. MAKE SURE YOU LABEL YOUR ANSWER!! (EXAMPLE: If I measure a crayon with paper clips and it took 2 paper clips to almost reach the length of my marker, then I will write 2 paper clips as my answer.)
